SALEM ? Bobby Valentine, the Red Sox ex-manager known to be something of a loose cannon, will speak at Salem State University on Thursday.
As of yesterday, a majority of tickets had been sold and there?s ?a good probability? the event will sell out, said Karen Cady, SSU spokeswoman.
Valentine will speak along with sportswriter and baseball journalist Peter Gammons, as part of Salem State?s annual speaker series. Doors at the O?Keefe Center, 225 Canal St., will open at 6:30 p.m. The event begins at 8 p.m.
?I?m sure there will be stories told that we haven?t heard before,? Cady said. ?It should be kind of interesting and could fill us in on the rest of the story.?
The Red Sox fired Valentine last month, the day after the team?s final game of the season. The Sox went 69-93, their worst record since 1965, and finished last in the American League East.
Valentine played for the Los Angeles Angels, San Diego Padres and New York Mets and managed the Mets and the Japanese Pacific League?s Chiba Lotte Marines before joining the Red Sox.
Tickets will be sold at the door. The majority of available tickets are for general admission, but there is a handful of premium and reserved seats left, Cady said. General admission tickets are $20, or $10 for students. Reserved seats are $50, and reserved seats with post-lecture reception are $80.
