How Acupuncture Works According To Traditional Acupuncture And ...

Acupuncture is one of the most popular traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) that is widely used for a range of conditions. It is done by inserting a solid, metallic, thin needle into the skin at different pressure points along the meridians. Needles can be manipulated manually or through electrical stimulation.

A patient may feel varied sensations at various acupuncture points also depending on what is happening from a health perspective. Additionally there are different ways to insert the needle to induce different effects. A patient seeing a skilled acupuncturist does not need to worry about pain in general.

Two Main Schools Of Thought
There are two main schools of thought regarding the big question of: how does acupuncture work? The original school of thought agrees with the concept of TCM, which is based on the flow of energy (qi) and the school of thought which emerged from the 1970s, led by doctors such as Dr. Felix Mann which is a scientifically based system known asmedical acupuncture today. Let's examine a little these two different schools of thought.

1 - Traditional Acupuncture
In order to understand the traditional acupuncture model we need to have a basic appreciation of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) concept of disease.

Disease in TCM is considered to occur when there is a lack of harmony between the interactions or functioning of qi, yin, yan, xu?, z?ng-f?, meridians as well as/or possibly an imbalance between the human body and its environmental surroundings.

To cure the disease the TCM practitioner needs to identify the pattern of disharmony, which for example can also be caused by an invasion of damp, cold or wind. Proponents of this ancient healing practice believe that the body contains at least 350 acupuncture points that lie along the 12 meridians or channels of the body.

Once the pattern is identified in TCM it is commonly treated with acupuncture and/or herbs.

A traditional acupuncturist will carry out a traditional diagnosis and know which points to insert the acupuncture needles to have the best result. Expert acupuncturists can determine the root cause of a disease by inspecting the patient's tongue, breathing, smell of breath, sound of the voice and strength of the pulse. The intensity of acupuncture treatments given to patients vary depending on the results of the diagnosis.

2 - Medical Acupuncture
Medical acupuncture is best explained in the concept of neuroscience. It is believed that acupuncture plays a vital role in treating and preventing the onset of diseases by accessing and stimulating the acupuncture points in the body.

There is quite a bit of research which shows that acupuncture promotes overall health and fitness by stimulating the central nervous system to produce chemicals and hormones to the spinal cord, brain and muscles of the body.

These chemicals can either lessen the intensity of pain or trigger the production of other hormones and chemicals that can help in regulating the body's internal functions and processes. The increased production of chemicals and hormones helps in stimulating and enhancing the body's natural restorative, therapeutic and healing abilities thereby promoting a healthy emotional and physical being.

When the needles are inserted into the acupuncture points, it stimulates the nerve fibres to send nerve impulse to the spinal cord. It further stimulates the production of endorphins such as dynorphin and enkephalin that inhibit pain.

When the nerve fibres are stimulated, it also sends nerve signals to certain areas of the mid-brain that is responsible for the production of enkephalin which is a precursor to the production of monoamine transmitters like norepinephrine and serotonin. These monoamine transmitters play vital roles in suppressing the transmission of pain signals. Meanwhile, serotonin is scientifically proven to have anti-depressant effects to the brain aside from the fact that it reduces the intensity of pain.

Acupuncture is also beneficial in the production of adrenocorticotropic and beta-endorphin hormones. Endorphins provide immediate pain relief while adrenocorticotropic stimulates the adrenal gland to produce cortisol which is known for its anti-inflammatory effects.

Japanese v Chinese Acupuncture
Japanese and Chinese have different ways of conducting acupuncture. After a thorough investigation, a Japanese acupuncturist checks the pulse to determine where the needles should be inserted. Meanwhile, a Chinese acupuncturist checks the pulse once and examines the tongue to find out the activities that are taking place inside the body.

The Chinese believed that a disruption in the natural flow of energy or qi in the body can trigger the onset of different kinds of diseases. Furthermore, the lack of harmony between the mind and the body can cause an imbalance which can commence the development of diseases.

As well as different approaches and schools of thought, there are also a variety of different types of acupuncture.

France poised to unveil a budget heavy on taxes

PARIS (AP) ? The French government aims to tackle the country's deficit and jumpstart its economy when it unveils its budget for next year on Friday.

"This is a serious budget, it's a leftist budget and it's fighting budget," Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici told French radio station Europe-1 Friday morning, before the legislation was presented to the Cabinet.

Governments across Europe have had to tread a fine line between cutting the debts that dragged them into the current financial crisis and fighting to keep their economies out of recession. The French economy, the second largest among the 17 countries that use the euro, has not grown for three straight quarters, the national statistics agency confirmed Friday.

Economists warn, however, that things could get much worse in France if it doesn't get serious about slashing state spending and reforming stringent labor laws.

Moscovici said the budget would be a "combat" on three fronts: against the financial crisis, against inequality and against the debt.

President Francois Hollande, who took office in May, promised that he would slash the country's deficit to 3 percent next year ? a limit required by European rules. To do that, the government must find ?30 billion. One-third of that is expected to come in spending cuts, with the rest in new or higher taxes on the wealthy and big companies, including a 75 percent tax on incomes over ?1 million.

The budget is built around an expectation of 0.8 percent growth for next year. However, if growth misses the projections, more cuts could be needed later.

Moscovici conceded that most economists predict the French economy will grow just 0.5 percent, but said that if the European debt crisis stabilizes, France would meet its targets.

Muse singer rips Glenn Beck for liking his music

Kevin Winter / Getty Images file

By Rolling Stone

Muse?are unhappy with the way American right-wingers, particularly Glenn Beck, have embraced their music,?The Guardian?reports. In an upcoming interview with the Observer on Sunday, singer Matt Bellamy singles out Beck's affinity for the band's 2009 album "The Resistance," and criticizes the conservative radio host for using the single "Uprising" in rightwing conspiracy-theorist videos on YouTube.

Lil Wayne tops Elvis as king of Hot 100 hits

"In the U.S. the conspiracy theory subculture has been hijacked by the right to try to take down people like Obama and put forward rightwing libertarianism," said Bellamy, who describes himself as "a left-leaning libertarian?-- more in the realm of Noam Chomsky." He continued, "'Uprising' was requested by so many politicians in America for use in their rallies and we turned them down on a regular basis."

Hear this: Earphone cords make cool portraits

Bellamy maintained his lyrical content is more about personal healing than espousing political sentiments. "When I dabble in watching the news and reading about current events I tend to get a future negative view and that's something I've dealt with through music," he said. "It's quite possible I'm slightly paranoid. But I'd say making music is an expression of feelings of helplessness and lack of control that I think a lot of people can relate to."

Muse's next album, "The 2nd Law," is out Oct. 2.

Mummy Knows Reviews: Katie is back in

Hey all, so I am back from my trip to AZ. We had a lot of fun and I am so glad that Aiden slept on the airplane on the way over. We had fun hanging out with family and friends at the baby shower. But I do have to say Aiden has learned a lot about cause and effect. He has been kind of a brat the last few weeks. Well lets face it he is almost 2, I am sure a lot of you other moms know how that is. Well he was mad about something, so he hit the rocking glider and it rocked back at him. So of course it hit him in the face/mouth and so he got his gum cut a little. It bleed really had at first but he was fine. Poor baby. Then the night before we went home he got into the kitchen. Well I guess he wanted to look at the cans and one fell on his toe. His "big" toe swelled up so bad and it even chipped the nail a little.

(could not get a good pic cause he was moving)

Because of his factor 5 we decided to take him to the ER (that and we wanted to make sure it was not broken). They ended up burning a hole into his nail so some of the pressure would come down. Then they took him for an X-ray. I was so?glad?to have April there to take him back. (I would not take him because I'm pregnant)?Luckily?he had no broken bones so we when home a few hours later.

Needless to say it was midnight by the time we got home. Then and we had to be up and out of the house before 8am to get on the airport But we where able to get on the airplane first because my poor little boy could not walk very well. And of course he did not sleep on the plane this time! He did ok at first, he played with the Ipad and colored. But when we where about about 20 from landing he wanted down so he could run around. So after him crying (no throwinig a huge fit) for a few mins he fell asleep.

When we got off the airplane and got our bags he was SOOOOO happy to see his daddy.

Male DNA commonly found in women?s brains, likely from prior pregnancy with a male fetus

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? Male DNA is commonly found in the brains of women, most likely derived from prior pregnancy with a male fetus, according to first-of-its-kind research conducted at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. While the medical implications of male DNA and male cells in the brain are unknown, studies of other kinds of microchimerism -- the harboring of genetic material and cells that were exchanged between fetus and mother during pregnancy -- have linked the phenomenon to autoimmune diseases and cancer, sometimes for better and other times for worse.

The study findings are published Sept. 26 in PLOS ONE. Lead author William F. N. Chan, Ph.D., in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Alberta, conducted the research while working in the Hutchinson Center laboratory of J. Lee Nelson, M.D., a member of the Center's Clinical Research Division and a leading international authority on microchimerism. Nelson is senior author on the paper.

Chan said the study is the first description of male microchimerism in the female human brain. The findings support the likelihood that fetal cells frequently cross the human blood-brain barrier and that microchimerism in the brain is relatively common. Until this study, it was not known whether these cells could cross the barrier in humans. For this research, scientists examined brain autopsy specimens from 59 women who had died between the ages of 32 and 101. Male microchimerism was detected in 63 percent of subjects, was distributed in multiple brain regions and was potentially persistent throughout the human lifespan; the oldest female in whom male fetal DNA was detected in the brain was 94.

Twenty six of the women had no neurological disease and 33 had Alzheimer's disease. The brains of women with Alzheimer's had a somewhat lower prevalence of male microchimerism, which appeared in lower concentrations in regions of the brain most affected by the disease. However, the authors noted that the small number of subjects and largely unknown pregnancy history of the women means a link between Alzheimer's disease and level of male cells of fetal origin cannot be established.

The study also does not provide an association between male microchimerism in the female brain and relative health versus disease. "Currently, the biological significance of harboring male DNA and male cells in the human brain requires further investigation," Chan said.

However, other Hutchinson Center studies of male microchimerism in women have found it to impact a woman's risk of developing some types of cancer and autoimmune disease. In some conditions, such as breast cancer, cells of fetal origin are thought to confer protection; in others, such as colon cancer, they have been associated with increased risk. Hutchinson Center studies also have linked lower risk of rheumatoid arthritis to women who previously had given birth at least once as compared to nulliparous women. Grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research funded the study, which also involved researchers from the Department of Pathology and Division of Rheumatology at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Fight against MS becomes personal for Edible Arrangements ...

BOSTON, Sept. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- How far would you walk to help out a family member? If you are Nick D'Alleva, 50 miles is not too far to go if it means getting closer to a cure for multiple sclerosis, a disease that has stricken two family members.

D'Alleva joined other relatives recently for the three-day MS Challenge Walk through the streets of Cape Cod to help raise funds toward finding a cure for MS. It was just the latest effort in what has become a personal and professional crusade for the Boston-based Edible Arrangements franchisee.

D'Alleva first became aware of the realities of multiple sclerosis (MS) when his brother-in-law, Carl Lombardi, and Carl's daughter, Melissa, were both diagnosed with the disease just nine years apart. In 2005, Carl's brother, Kevin took part in a fundraising walk for the National MS Society and shortly thereafter, Nick joined in.

"We are a family, and when your family is in pain, you do everything in your power to fight for them," says D'Alleva. "That walk inspired Kevin to take charge and I just jumped in with him."

The next year they pulled more family members together to create the "Lombardi Party" as a group fundraising team. And now, just six years later, the "Lombardi Party" is the largest fundraiser for MS in the state of Massachusetts.

Already this year the group has raised $56,000, thanks in large part to D'Alleva's decision to use his Edible Arrangements franchise as a tool in the fight against MS. Earlier this year, he approached fellow Edible Arrangements franchisees in the area to help him raise funds through a special promotion. The group raised $10,000 and now there are discussions about taking the effort into other markets.

"This cause is very personal to my family and when things get personal, there are no limits to what you can do," adds D'Alleva.

He applies that optimism to every area of his life. Not only does D'Alleva run his three Boston-area Edible Arrangements stores, but he also contributes to all of the "Lombardi Party" fundraising events. From comedy and Vegas nights to golf and whiffle ball tournaments, D'Alleva devotes much of his free time to help lead in the fight against MS.

"I pretty much have two full time jobs and you couldn't pay me to give up either of them," he says. "Taking care of my family is my only priority, and I'll continue working to that end in every way that I can."

Meet the man who gave the Mars rover its eyes

Iconic pictures from the latest mission to the Red Planet are coming courtesy of space imaging expert Michael Malin

Curiosity landed in Gale Crater, which contains Mount Sharp, in early August and stunning images followed. Any favourites?
My favourite from the early days is the heat shield view we released as Curiosity descended. I think that will become an iconic image, just as the Saturn V second-stage and trans-stage separations are famous images of the Apollo era.

Beyond aesthetics, what use are the images?
Using MARDI - the Mars Descent Imager, which took photos of the ground below as the rover landed - I've done what I personally wanted, which was to position the rover very accurately. I also want to make a high-definition video of the landing, smoothing out the jerkiness of four frames per second to a smoother 30 frames per second using optical flow techniques. For Mastcam - the twin cameras on the rover's head, about 2 metres off the ground - my interests are in how the ground got to look the way it does; I'm interested in the processes involved in eroding Mount Sharp.

What can the Mastcam images tell us about how the ground got to look the way it does?
That is the essence of geomorphology. I can't really answer this question in the absence of data, which we have just started to receive. An example might be as follows: we have not yet seen any sand ripples at the place the rover landed, but there are large sand dunes only a few kilometres away. Why aren't there ripples near the rover? Is there no sand moving there, or does it move so quickly it doesn't leave a trace? We don't know but we will keep our eyes open for evidence as we do our research.

What drew you to planetary geology?
Geologists are very lucky, we get to look at beautiful things and figure out how they got to be that beautiful. Such understanding can be used to capture and preserve the beauty for posterity, and to enrich people's enjoyment of these things through better understanding. When I tell people I'm a geologist, they are often full of questions about, and enthusiasm for, what I do. When I tell them I study the geology of Mars, their interest increases. What excites me is solving the mysteries I encounter in how planets work.

There was originally a plan to install zoom cameras, a project involving film-maker James Cameron. Did you want cinematic footage?
We did not intend to take too many sequences not really oriented towards science or engineering, but if we had flown the zoom-lens cameras, I believe we would have taken some more dramatic, cinematic scenes to illustrate the excitement of Mars exploration. This may still be possible with the cameras that flew, but it will be much harder.

Is there any tension between the scientific and public-engagement uses of the cameras?
I am pleased to have the public excited about my experiments and Mars. But I am not happy with NASA HQ requiring me to put out raw images to the public in near-real time, without commentary or context. I think we can engage the public better.

Heat's Bosh: Ready for camp, injury 'behind him'

(AP) ? Heat forward Chris Bosh insists food tasted better this summer. People were friendlier to him and his family. Everything, he said, seemed more fun.

It could have all gone a decidedly different way.

The abdominal injury that nearly ended his season ? and probably would have doomed Miami's title chances ? is behind him now, Bosh said. But when things looked most bleak, when the Heat lost two straight games to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference semifinals after he got hurt, Bosh was preparing himself for a long offseason without a championship to savor.

"I thought it was over," Bosh said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I didn't want to fully emotionally invest myself anymore because I didn't want to get hurt like last year when we lost the finals. I kind of had a letdown. I'm not going to lie. I was defeated. And then my wife came to me and said, 'You know, you said things were going to look bad, but you have to keep going.'"

So he did. After missing about three weeks ? the typical recovery time for an injury like his is often twice that long ? Bosh returned for the East finals against Boston. He made a huge 3-pointer in Game 7 as part of a 19-point effort to help beat the Celtics, then averaged 14.6 points against Oklahoma City as the Heat beat the Thunder in five games for the NBA championship.

On Saturday the Heat open training camp in Miami. And Bosh is eager to get the group back together.

"I feel good. I feel real good," Bosh said. "I've been pretty eager to get back with training camp looming and everything. I'm real excited to get back, start working. I've been in the gym a few times in the past couple weeks and that itch for basketball is there. I'm glad it's there and I'm looking forward to this season."

He's beginning his 10th NBA season, as are fellow Heat stars LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Their ballyhooed decision to team up in Miami in the summer of 2010 led to countless adjustments to everyone, especially Bosh, who went from being the top option in Toronto to the perceived third-wheel with the Heat.

In Miami, they insist that isn't even close to the truth. Wade and James routinely referred to Bosh last season as Miami's "most important player," and the reasons why they say that were on display when the Heat struggled in the playoffs while Bosh dealt with the abdominal injury.

"I know his talent," Wade said. "I know what he brings to the game."

By now, probably just about everyone does.

Game 7 against Boston was a classic for the Heat, a game where for 13 minutes ? a 46-possession span ? of the second half, neither team led by more than two points. Bosh changed that for good when he made his career-best third 3-pointer of the night and sparked the burst that pushed Miami to what became a 101-88 win.

Hard to believe that a couple weeks earlier, he could barely walk.

"I remember thinking just before that shot, if it hits my hands, I'm shooting it," Bosh said. "I don't really think that one particular shot was a significant moment. There were a lot of significant moments. ... The whole time that game was going on, I just knew we were going to win. I didn't have any doubt in my mind. And every time I touched the ball and I shot the ball in that game, I knew it was going in. That's just how I felt."

The biggest key for him now is not feeling the same sort of pain he felt when he got hurt while dunking in Game 1 of the second-round series with Indiana.

It's been his biggest priority this summer, and will stay that way.

"It's behind me. But I still have to pay attention to stretching and strengthening all the muscles in the core around it and everything," Bosh said. "It's something that I just can't forget about. I'm not sure if I can re-aggravate it but I'm sure, just like anything, it has the potential to be chronic. If we stay on top of it and continue to do the proper treatment, proper stretching and proper strengthening, I don't see it being an issue."

Bosh spent nearly a decade chasing his first NBA title, as did James. Several other players on last season's Heat roster waited even longer to be fitted for their first championship ring.

The motivation going forward, Bosh said, is easy. He wants the Heat to, as he put it, "get greedy."

"Winning a championship is only the beginning for this group, and we have to look at it that way," Bosh said. "We have to look at it as we're trying to have a dynasty. I think that's the next thing. The only way you can do that is to have more than one championship. I look at it as a five- to six-year increment, where we're trying to win as many as possible."

Cardio Workout for Bodyweight | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets ...

Today it?s time for the Top 5 Cardio exercises using nothing but your own bodyweight. Now I will say that sprints ? especially hill sprints or stair running are a great cardio workout but this is for people with limited space looking for some home exercise workout solutions or a good hotel room workout .

These are hard ? my clients hate most of them but I love em.

Give the cross-trainer or the treadmill the boot and do some real cardio. Best bit is you can do these anywhere because you only need your own bodyweight.

Jeff Bridges

Jeff Bridges is an American actor, musician and producer. He began his first televised acting in 1958 as a child with his father, Lloyd Bridges, and brother Beau on television?s Sea Hunt. Some of his best-known major motion films include: Tron, Fearless, Iron Man, The Contender, Starman, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Jagged Edge, Against All Odds, The Fisher King, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Seabiscuit, Arlington Road, and The Big Lebowski. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Otis ?Bad? Blake in the film Crazy Heart?(2009) and earned his sixth Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn in True Grit?(2010).

He was born Jeffrey Leon Bridges on December 4, 1949 in Los Angeles, California to actor Lloyd Bridges and actress and writer Dorothy Bridges. His older brother is actor Beau Bridges, he also has a younger sister, Lucinda, who is an artist and another brother Garrett, who died of sudden infant death syndrome in 1948. Bridges shared a close relationship with his brother Beau growing up, as Beau acted as a surrogate father to him when their father was working. At age seventeen, Bridges toured with his father in a stage production of Anniversary Waltz. After graduating from high school, he went to New York City to study acting at the Herbert Berghof Studio. He also joined the United States Coast Guard Reserve, where he served for eight years.?Bridges also has a passion for music and in 2011 had signed a recording contract with Blue Note Records/EMI Music Group and released his second album, Jeff Bridges?(2011).

Lloyd Bridges

Lloyd Bridges, Jr. was an America actor, best known for his role of Mike Nelson in Sea Hunt, the most popular syndicated American TV series in 1958. He was born in San Leandro, California to Harriet Evelyn (Brown) and Lloyd Vernet Bridges, Sr., who was involved in the California hotel business and once owned a movie theater. His parents were both natives of Kansas, and had English ancestry. Bridges studied political science at UCLA, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He joined the stock company at Columbia Pictures, where he played small roles in features and short subjects. He left Columbia to enlist in the U.S. Coast Guard and following World War II, he returned to film acting. He was blacklisted briefly in the 1950s after he admitted to the House Un-American Activities Committee that he had once been a member of the Actors? Lab, a group with links to the Communist Party. He resumed working after being cleared by the FBI, finding his greatest success in television. Bridges met his wife, Dorothy Bridges in his fraternity at UCLA; they married in 1938 in New York City.

Dorothy Louise Bridges was an American actress and poet born in Worcester, Massachusetts. She was of English ancestry. Her family moved to Los Angeles when she was two years old. She made her film debut in the movie Finders Keepers. Bridges occasionally returned to acting throughout her life, often in roles where she was able to work with members of her family. She had introduced her children to the acting profession as their first drama teacher. She encouraged each of her children to ?pretend? for an hour each day. Dorothy also wrote poetry, later publishing some of her work. She was known to write love poems to her husband every Valentine?s Day during their 59 year marriage. She released her memoirs in 2005, You Caught Me Kissing: A Love Story.

Beau Bridges

Beau Bridges (born Lloyd Vernet Bridges III) is also an American actor and director. He was nicknamed Beau?by his parents after Ashley Wilkes? son in Gone with the Wind. He wanted to become a basketball star and played his freshman year at UCLA, and later transferred to the University of Hawaii. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1959 and served eight years in the Coast Guard Reserve. Bridges appeared along with his brother, Jeff, on their father?s CBS anthology series, The Lloyd Bridges Show. His best known role is perhaps the 1989 film The Fabulous Baker Boys?in which he starred opposite his brother Jeff. From 2002-2003, he took on the role of Senator Tom Gage, newly appointed Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, in over 30 episodes of the drama series The Agency. He won a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album with Cynthia Nixon and Blair Underwood in 2009 for their recording of Al Gore?s An Inconvenient Truth. Bridges has two children ? Casey and Jordan Bridges with his first wife Julie Landfield and three children ? Dylan, Emily and Ezekiel Jeffrey ?Zeke? Bridges with his second wife Wendy Treece.

Jordan Bridges

Jordan Bridges is the third generation of actors in the Bridges family. He made his first professional acting debut at the age of five in the television film ?The Kid from Nowhere?, directed by his father, Beau. After a break he returned once more in the television film ?The Thanksgiving Promise? in 1986 starring the entire Bridges family. Not wanting to be a child actor he left acting and attended L.A.?s progressive Oakwood school. He got interested in acting again as the school had a strong emphasis on the arts. He followed it up as a theater major and literature minor at New York?s Bard College. Before earning his bachelor?s degree, Bridges spent his junior year in England studying at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, living in a tiny basement flat in Chelsea, and attending West End theatre productions on free passes. Recently, Bridges appears in the TNT drama series Rizzoli & Isles, which premiered in July 2010.

Did you know Jeff along with his brother Beau and father Lloyd all have stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Jeff and Beau have stars in the category of Motion pictures and Lloyd?s star is in the category of Television. All three stars are located on the same block of 7065 Hollywood Blvd.

The K5JAW Blog: Emergency Communications

K5JAW has been appointed by Mississippi ARRL Section Manger W5XX to serve as the amateur radio Emergency Coordinator (EC) for Bolivar, Leflore, Sunflower, and Washington counties until September 2014.?

Amateur radio operators are charged with the responsibility of providing emergency communications as a condition of our license privileges.? Specifically, rules Part 97.1(a) says: Recognition and enhancement of the value of the amateur service to the public as a voluntary noncommercial communication service, particularly with respect to providing emergency communications.

The amateur radio community provides this service through the Amateur Radio Emergency Services organization of the American Radio Relay League.? In the coming weeks, I'll be contacting the emergency management directors in Bolivar, Leflore, Sunflower and Washington counties to ascertain their interest in having amateur radio communications support.? Public safety communications systems have rapidly evolved in recent years, becoming more robust and highly technical.? Amateur radio has also become more technical, and in some cases, actually pioneered a number of new technologies that moved into the public safety field.? Amateur radio has not lost, however, the ability to quickly adapt and remain flexible in order to get the message through.

If you have an interest in becoming a licensed amateur radio operator, drop me an email k5jaw (at) arrl.net. We're hoping to offer training & licensing programs in the future as we develop these new programs.? Come join in!

Suicide bomber kills 2, injures 45 in Nigeria

BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) ? A suicide car bomber attacked a Catholic church conducting Mass in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing two people and wounding another 45 in a region under assault by a radical Islamist sect, officials said.

An Associated Press journalist heard the explosion after 9 a.m. Sunday in the city of Bauchi, which has seen a number of bombings and shootings blamed on the sect known as Boko Haram. The blast appeared to hit a parking lot alongside the St. John's Catholic Church in the city.

Police and military surrounded the church and did not allow journalists inside the cordon. Later at a nearby hospital, Bauchi deputy police commissioner T. Stevens told journalists told that the bomber had been stopped at the church's gate, where he detonated the explosives packed inside his car.

Doctors cautioned more could die from their injuries.

"The situation has been brought under control," Stevens said. "We have our men minding all areas."

Stevens said no group or individual had claimed responsibility for the attack, though suspicion immediately fell on Boko Haram. The sect, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's north, has been waging an increasingly bloody fight against nation's weak central government. More than 680 people have died in drive-by killings and bombings blamed on Boko Haram this year alone, according to an AP count. The sect has demanded the release of all its captive members and has called for strict Shariah law to be implemented across the entire country.

The sect has used suicide car bombs against churches in the past, most noticeably a 2011 Christmas Day attack on a Catholic church in Madalla near Nigeria's capital. That attack and assaults elsewhere in the country killed at least 44 people. An unclaimed car bombing on Easter in Kaduna killed at least 38 people on a busy roadway after witnesses say it was turned away from a church.

Attacks against churches by the sect have waned in recent weeks. Nigeria's military claimed it killed the sect's spokesman and a commander Sept. 17 outside the city of Kano, potentially shaking up a sect that has continued attacks despite a tighter military presence in northern cities.

The killing of members of the sect's senior leadership comes as the group recently changed some of its tactics and attacked more than 30 mobile phone towers throughout northern Nigeria, disrupting communications in a nation reliant on cellular phones.

Saturday night, the military conducted door-to-door searches in the northern cities of Damaturu and Potiskum, areas now under a 24-hour curfew that have been hard-hit by the sect.

Hearing Tests for Children | ArticleBro.com

Hearing tests for children are a typical part of routine check-ups conducted by general practitioners. A hearing test is usually administered at infancy and repeated on a yearly or bi-yearly basis as the child grows and develops. Proper and routine hearing tests are crucial to the wellbeing of every child. Undetected hearing loss in a child can lead to improper development including permanent speech impediments and delayed learning. With new technology, hearing clinics can effectively conduct hearing tests in children of all ages, including infants.
If it often difficult to determine whether a child has hearing loss. Some signs that your child needs a hearing test include speech delay, common ear infections, family history of hearing loss and poor school performance. Additionally, hearing tests may be conducted if your child has been diagnosed with a learning disability or syndrome associated with hearing loss (down syndrome, for example) or if he or she has had an infectious disease or has received medical treatment where hearing loss is a side effect. With these scenarios, hearing clinics can provide a better assessment of and solution for hearing impairment.
There are currently several different types of hearing tests for children, all available at most hearing clinics. Objective tests are one form of hearing tests which require no feedback from the patient. These hearing tests can be conducted through a variety of means and are an ideal hearing test for infants.
Behavioural observation audiometry hearing tests are another form of hearing test for younger children. They involve using an instrument such as a rattle or music box to make noise and observing the child?s response. This hearing test is commonly conducted at hearing clinics and is mostly used for babies under seven months of age.
Visual reinforcement audiometry hearing tests involve pairing sounds with visual reinforcement. Speakers are placed on either side of the child and when a noise is produced the child will instinctively turn his or her head toward the source of the sound. When the child turns his or her head a visual stimulus (such as a puppet) is displayed and used as positive reinforcement for the behaviour. This form of hearing test can be used for babies as young as five months; however, because it uses speakers, it is not extremely effective in assessing the hearing for each ear individually. If the child is willing to participate, headphones can be used which allow for a more accurate judgement of the hearing in each ear.
The last type of hearing test commonly used in hearing clinics is play audiometry. This hearing test requires the child to move an object or set an object in a certain place when instructed to do so. For example, an audiologist may tell a child to put a block in a bucket. This instruction continues as the instructing voice gets quieter and quieter. This type of hearing test is commonly used for children aged three to five years.

The WBT Pre-Game Show ? 4488: A Ridge Blog

WBT!

No, not a Women?s Badminton Tournament.

Nor the World?s Best Tetherballers.

Rather, it?s the Wine Bloggers Tasting, and this is the Pre-Game Show!

I?m your host, and I?d like to introduce the players who?ll be taking the field for this very special event.

But before we begin, a bit of context:

This tasting series debuted back in March of 2010, and?while?we?ve certainly played host to?a veritable who?s who of Wine Bloggers, it hasn?t only been Wine Bloggers we?ve hosted. We?ve had food bloggers, culture bloggers, music bloggers, drinks bloggers, and more.

And, while there have certainly been a great many welcomed and returning faces, we?ve also had a great time?debuting new participants as well.

The new edition of our WBT, set for tomorrow afternoon at 1pm, is no exception; in fact, we?ve got on tap one of the more diversely exciting?assemblages we?ve yet set glassware for.

Behold! (In no particular order ?)

First up, Jeska?& Brad Kittenbrink, better known as ?Geeks With Drinks!? Lovers of Gourmet Food Trucks, brewers of beer, and stealers of cocktail cherries, these San Francisco-based bloggers are debuting at our series tomorrow, and we?re really looking forward to meeting and tasting with them! To get the flavor of their flavor, please give a read to the following:

http://geekswithdrinks.com/?p=71

Next, the Rad Man himself, one of the hecka best wine bloggers going, and possibly the only other wine blogger out there besides yours truly who comes in fairly high in the Google queue if you search for ?The Never-Ending Story!? Of course I?m speaking of Jeff Solomon, esteemed author of the Stay Rad wine blog. You can read a fantastic sample here:

http://stayradwineblog.com/2011/07/28/this-changes-everything/

Our next blogger is ? well ? Jen. And I?d tell you more about her, but I?m still trying to ?Chase? her down! Meaning, of course, we?re speaking of Jen Massey, author of the blog ?Chasing Jen!? Jen is debuting at our series as well, and we can?t wait to host her! You can read an example of her fine work here:

http://chasingjen.com/2012/01/23/wine-fried-chick-legs-and-rain-pure-comfort/

Next up, Fred Swan, he of the NorCal Wine Blog, an indisputable Gold Standard for Wine Blogging in ours, this Golden State. Selfishly, I?m going to recommend a post of his in which he wrote about?our?tasting series; though not because of that, per se, but rather, because he referred to me as the ?Instigator-In-Chief,? and I think that?s quite groovy. You can read his work here:

http://norcalwine.com/blog/51-general-interest/684-on-wine-jazz-and-inkblots?q=ridge

And for our next participant, may I present Erin Grant, a wine blogger with a mission, currently tasting her way through an entire planet?s worth of wine varietals. To read a sample of her fine writing on the blog ?Give Me Grapes? please click below:

http://www.givemegrapes.com/2012/05/gold-country-wine.html

And here?s another debut for you; in fact, it?s a double-debut! Mark & Tristan, who write, amongst them, three blogs! Dig these:

http://www.winelog.net/blogs/markur/

http://positivepalate.com/

http://hahnwinery.com/blog/hahn-harvest-2012-begins-today

(Yes, that?s the Hahn Winery blog there in the #3 spot; Mark writes that one! Quite cool ?)

And now, I must say, there are few things that I find more emotionally and morally satisfying than an East Coaster happily transplanting to the west; it?s clear affirmation of what I truly believe; that Northern California is indeed The Promised Land. Melanie Friedman is just such an ex-pat, and she brings vital real-life winemaking experience to her blog endeavors; case in point the following post on her blog ?Wine Maven In Training?, entitled ?Gravity Flow Winemaking at Vineyard 29?:

http://iheartnywines.blogspot.com/2012/02/gravity-flow-winemaking.html

And then there?s my man Ed Thralls. You?ve recently seen him name-checked here on this blog, because we co-hosted ? with the subversive, soulful and wise Sasha Kadey ? a panel at this year?s Wine Blogger?s Conference (which you can read about on the fantastic Luscious Lushes Wine Blog; sadly, Thea won?t be in attendance at our tasting tomorrow, but you can dig her spirit as she writes about our panel; just click here.). Ed gets it every which way, and there ain?t no one I respect more; check the sample:

http://www.winetonite.com/2010/08/07/in-search-of-soul-and-grapes/

Rachel Voorhees?has been known to taste a wine or two in the company of the above-noted Thea, but mark my words, she is a publishing powerhouse in her own right, and an enviable fount of oeno-energy; check out a sample of her great work below:

http://rachelvoorhees.com/2012/09/drunken-fruit-salsa/

Yet another debut at our Wine Bloggers Tasting Series will be the writer behind VineBuzz, Rich Reader, who I am already quite fond of because he uses words like ?genotype? when talking wine blogs, and who writes the following from the 2011 iteration of the Wine Bloggers Conference:

http://vinebuzz.biz/node/106

A rather newer member of the Wine Bloggers Tasting family is the writer behind FoodPorn.com, which is, for my money, one of the most brilliantly executed, fully-fleshed?out, conceptually-driven blogs out there; this blog doesn?t miss a thematic trick, and it?s well worth a read. Here?s a great sample:

http://foodporn.com/1pescygourmet/2012/04/pebble-beach-food-and-wine-not-a-bad-sunday.html

Perhaps inevitably enough, FoodPorn.com will be in the company of WineA&*^#le.com, which, despite the sardonicisms?inherent to the name, actually provides some cracklingly intelligent?perspective on our industry. Dig a bit of the vibe here:

http://wineasshole.com/2010/03/03/cakebread-and-the-cuvee-de-fail-rubaiyat/

And that, is our team, and they?ll be taking the field at 1pm PST tomorrow!

If you wish to follow along with the tasting, just tune in with your favorite twitter-filter, and watch out for the #RidgeVineyards hashtag!

Move to less impoverished neighborhoods boosts physical and mental health

Friday, September 21, 2012

Moving from a high-poverty to lower-poverty neighborhood spurs long-term gains in the physical and mental health of low-income adults, as well as a substantial increase in their happiness, despite not improving economic self-sufficiency, according to a new study published in the Sept. 20 issue of Science by researchers at the University of Chicago and partners at other institutions.

Although moving into less disadvantaged neighborhoods did not raise incomes for the families that moved, these families experienced important gains in well-being in other ways. Moving from a high-poverty neighborhood to one with a poverty rate 13 percentage points lower increased the happiness of low-income adults by an amount equivalent to the gains caused by a $13,000 rise in family income.

Using data from a large-scale randomized social experiment called Moving to Opportunity, the authors found that neighborhood income segregation had a greater impact than neighborhood racial segregation in shaping the outcomes of adults in the study. "This finding is important, in part, because racial segregation has been trending down since 1970, but income segregation has gone up steadily since then," said lead author Jens Ludwig, the McCormick Foundation Professor of Social Service Administration, Law and Public Policy at UChicago and director of the University of Chicago Crime Lab. "So the problem of adverse neighborhood effects on low-income families seems to be getting worse, rather than better, over time."

Another implication of the study is that looking at the growth over time in inequality with respect to family income ? a key focus of much of the inequality discussion ? understates the growth in inequality of well-being. Focusing on income inequality ignores the negative effects on poor families from growing residential segregation by economic status. The researchers estimate that the drop in happiness of low-income adults due to growing residential income segregation since 1970 is large enough to offset the full income growth for low-income Americans over the past four decades.

"Focusing just on trends in income inequality over time in the U.S., while ignoring the growth of income segregation over time, understates the trends towards greater inequality in well-being in America," Ludwig said.

The new paper, "Neighborhood Effects on the Long-Term Well-Being of Low-Income Adults," was co-authored by a national team of collaborators in addition to Ludwig. It relied on data from 4,604 low-income families that enrolled in Moving to Opportunity, an experiment that used a random lottery to offer some families initially living in distressed public housing projects the chance to move into lower-poverty areas. The Science paper looks at outcomes among adults 10 to 15 years after they moved.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development operated Moving to Opportunity from 1994 to 1998 in five cities: Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. Families volunteered for the study, and some were picked at random to receive housing voucher subsidies to move to lower-poverty communities. Other families were randomly assigned to a control group that received no special assistance under the program.

People in the study were extremely disadvantaged economically. Most households were headed by African American or Hispanic females ?fewer than 40 percent of whom had completed high school. Their primary reason for participating was to get away from gangs and drug activity and find better apartments and better schools for their children.

A previous paper found that MTO participants who moved had fewer problems with extreme obesity and long-term risks.
