Unlocked iPhone 5 available, but it'll cost you $649 (or more)

If you really want an iPhone 5 but don't want to sign a two-year agreement, there's some good news for you this Friday morning: You can now buy an unlocked iPhone 5 from Apple. There are some catches though.

For starters, the out-of-contract iPhone 5 is pricey.?While a carrier-subsidized device costs you between $199 and $399, the unlocked???but otherwise identical???iPhone 5 will set you back?$649 to $849.

On top of the painful news for your wallet, there's another annoyance:?The unlocked model being offered by Apple "only works on supported GSM networks, such as AT&T in the U.S."?

This particular phone won't run on carriers that use CDMA networks, such as Verizon and Sprint. If you are on one of those carriers, you're better off purchasing a device from them at full price and calling them to get it "country unlocked" (assuming you're intending to use it internationally).

And if you want an unlocked phone to use on T-Mobile, the only major U.S.?carrier without an iPhone, keep in mind that the device won't offer the brisk 4G LTE?data you'll see on the supported carriers. (T-Mobile is working on upgrading its network to change this though.)

If you are travelling internationally, you'll instantly be able to throw a local GSM carrier's nano-SIM into the unlocked iPhone 5 and use it with out any issues, but top speeds will vary depending on whether that carrier has a 4G LTE network or not.?(If you were to purchase a full-price device from a carrier, you'd have to wait for a certain time period before you can get it unlocked for use outside of the U.S., which can be annoying.)

The unlocked iPhone 5 model will take about a week to ship, according to Apple's website. Coincidentally, the regular, carrier-locked versions of the smartphone are now?expected to ship within the same timeframe, which is great news for folks who have been frustrated by distant estimated delivery dates.

Diabetes is a manageable disease

After a family backpacking trip a couple weeks later, he weighed 66.

"It came on pretty quickly," said Gildon, now 28, reflecting on what led up to his eventual diagnosis: diabetes.

He's among the 26 million people in the United States with diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association, which acknowledges November as American Diabetes Month.

The recently published Diabetes Report Card 2012 from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) listed Oklahoma as having had the highest increase in adult diabetes from 1995 to 2010, with nearly one in 10 Oklahomans having the disease.

Diabetes is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose, or blood sugar, the CDC's report explained. With diabetes, the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or is unable to use its own insulin effectively.

Glucose builds up in the blood and causes a condition that, if not controlled, can lead to serious health complications and even death, the report said.

At the time he was diagnosed, Gildon wasn't familiar with diabetes.

On the way home from that aforementioned backpacking trip, Gildon kept asking his parents to make pit stops every 20 or 30 minutes. He was also thirsty.

Eventually, he started feeling bad. After the family made it home, their physician said Gildon might have flu, then wrote him a prescription.

That evening, he became sicker still, and couldn't keep water or Sprite down. That's when his mother took him to the emergency room.

A normal glucose level is in the 80-100 range, Gildon said. That night in the hospital, his hit 999.

Signs and symptoms of diabetes can be subtle and increase over time, said Dr. Laura J. Chalmers with the Harold Hamm Oklahoma Diabetes Center at the University of Oklahoma, 4444 E. 41 St.

Those signs include being more thirsty, urinating more often, waking at night to drink and go to the bathroom, and weight loss, Chalmers said. The appetite may also be increased, and some people will have nausea and vomiting.

Gildon was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, or type 1 diabetes (T1D), one of the three most common forms of diabetes, according to the CDC. Another, type 2 diabetes (T2D), makes up for about 95 percent of diagnosed diabetes in adults; the third, gestational diabetes, develops and is diagnosed as a result of pregnancy in 2 to 10 percent of pregnant women.

With T1D, the body is unable to produce insulin, a hormone secreted by pancreas to regulate blood sugar, Chalmers explained. Treatment for T1D is insulin.

In T2D, there is insulin resistance, she continued. Treatment for T2D involves weight loss, dietary changes and medications that help the body secrete insulin and overcome the insulin resistance. In some situations, patients with T2D require insulin.

Onset of T1D is typically before age 20 but presentable from approximately 6 months of age into adulthood, Chalmers said.

Annette Jones was 24 and pregnant with her youngest daughter when she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

"When women get gestational, it usually goes away after delivery," said Jones, alluding to the 2 percent of women who remain diabetic after pregnancy.

Jones has had diabetes for 27 years, more than half her life. Like Gildon, she wasn't too familiar with diabetes, other than having family members who were diabetic - but she was too young to understand what that meant.

"I knew there was not a cure and that you had to take shots," she said.

Lori Maisch was 45 when she was diagnosed with T1D. She had lost 25 pounds from May to September that year - "all the yard work I had been doing," she thought.

Constantly thirsty and going to the bathroom every 15 minutes, even at night, Maisch finally attracted the attention of someone in a doctor's office: her neighbor, who noticed her "sweet odor."

"It's the same scent I smell on patients that have diabetes," Maisch recalled her neighbor saying. "That prompted me to make an appointment with my primary care physician, be tested and diagnosed."

More than one diabetes

Misconceptions abound regarding diabetes, Chalmers said.

For example, T1D is treated with insulin and carbohydrate counting, she explained. Patients with T1D should have a healthy diet but are allowed to have cake, ice cream and other sweets within reason - as long as they take their insulin to cover the carbohydrates in the food they consume.

Maisch used to be one of those folks with preconceived notions about diabetes, she said. Since her diagnosis, people assume she has T2D because she's an adult.

"Then they say, 'I thought that only happened to children,' " she said. "Some will say, 'Oh, if you eat right and exercise more, you can control it.' No, that's type 2 - I am insulin-dependent."

Or she might have people tell her she can't have certain foods, like birthday cake, refusing to cut her a slice because "you can't have it," Maisch said. "I just need to adjust my insulin to eat it."

Most people don't know that there is more than one kind of diabetes, Jones said. Others she's met don't think that it's a big deal because diabetics take insulin.

"They don't realize the deadly consequences that occur with this disease," she said. "I have actually had people say to me, 'You have diabetes? You're not even fat.' I could go on and on."

Sometimes, people with diabetes might have a change in mood, experiencing "highs and lows," as Maisch said.

"If I am having either, I can come across irritable or out of it," she said. "I don't mean to but can't help it sometimes. I've found a lot of people don't understand that part of the disease."

Having diabetes can be expensive, too. Even with insurance, the two insulin shots Maisch needs each month are $100 each. Plus, she has test strips and syringes to buy. In all, it's about $400 out of her own pocket each month.

"I used to be more impulsive," Maisch said, "but now am more mindful regarding my meals and making sure I have my T1 pouch - blood glucose monitor, test strips, glucose tablets, insulin, syringe - every time I leave the house."

It takes planning

Another challenge is always having to be more prepared than the average person.

Like if a buddy of his asks him to go on a spur-of-the-moment bike ride, Gildon has to know what his blood sugar is, possibly take extra food with him in case he takes too much insulin or exercises too heavily.

If he goes on a long trip, he has to think ahead in case his insulin pump breaks - what would he do then? Gildon has to have a back-up plan.

When he'd go on a Boy Scout camping trip, Gildon and his dad crafted a case out of PVC pipe for his insulin so he could keep it in his sleeping bag on freezing nights - and insulin doesn't freeze.

One of the main challenges for Jones was changing her eating habits, like cutting back on carbs.

"Simplicity is gone," she said. "I can't go anywhere - store, work, park, ride my bike - without a plan, a snack or juice, something to treat low blood sugar."

Jones has to have her blood monitor with her at all times, and she checks her blood at least four, sometimes eight times a day.

Like Gildon, she wears a pump 24-7. "It is still better than six to seven shots a day," Jones said - but added, "I don't feel free."

Such adjustments aside, a normal, active life is achievable for most diabetics.

Jones wanted to have another baby after her second daughter, but the doctor said it was "probably best" she didn't.

"This was 27 years ago, so that mentality has changed now," said Jones, who has three beautiful daughters.

"God worked everything out," she said. "Maybe not the way I had planned it, but just perfect anyway."

Stop diabetes before it starts

American Diabetes Month takes place each November in order to raise awareness of this disease.

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), it is estimated that nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. Another 79 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

To stop this disease before it starts:

Get moving. Physical activity lowers blood sugar and boosts your sensitivity to insulin. Research shows both aerobic exercise and resistance training can help control diabetes. The ADA recommends a half-hour of mild aerobic activity five times per week.

Eat more whole grains. White bread, white rice and potatoes have a high glycemic index, which can cause spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels. Whole grain foods help with diabetes prevention because they slow down carb absorption.

Limit your sugar intake. Be sure to read nutritional labels and steer clear of anything that lists sugar, sucrose, corn syrup or other sweeteners, such as evaporated cane juice or molasses, as one of the first ingredients.

Stop smoking. According to a Harvard School of Public Health study, smokers are about 50 percent more likely to develop diabetes than nonsmokers. New research shows that inhaling secondhand smoke may also lead to an increased risk of diabetes.

Get more sleep. Not getting enough sleep increases hunger, which leads to weight gain and, therefore, raises your risk of getting diabetes.

Check your glucose levels. The ADA recommends blood glucose screening for everyone age 45 and older. Generally, this testing is repeated every three years. But if you have known risk factors (like high blood pressure or obesity), discuss them with your doctor.

Support for diabetes

After being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and not having a support system in place, Lori Maisch went into action.

She looked at the American Diabetes Association, JDRF (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and local support groups.

"I found that there were great meetings for type 2 (diabetes), for children with type 1, but none specifically for adults with type 1," Maisch said.

So she formed a group called T1Tulsa for adults older than 18 living with type 1 diabetes. They meet once a month. Sometimes they have speakers; sometimes they just visit and learn from one another.

"It is a special meeting for me, as it is the one time month I can look around the room, say anything, and everyone gets it," she said.

CAIRO (AP) ? The same chants used against Hosni Mubarak were turned against his successor Tuesday as more than 200,000 people packed Egypt's Tahrir Square in the biggest challenge yet to Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

The massive, flag-waving throng protesting Morsi's assertion of near-absolute powers rivaled some of the largest crowds that helped drive Mubarak from office last year.

"The people want to bring down the regime!" and "erhal, erhal" ? Arabic for "leave, leave" ? rang out across the plaza, this time directed at Egypt's first freely elected president.

The protests were sparked by edicts Morsi issued last week that effectively neutralize the judiciary, the last branch of government he does not control. But they turned into a broader outpouring of anger against Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood, which opponents say have used election victories to monopolize power, squeeze out rivals and dictate a new, Islamist constitution, while doing little to solve Egypt's mounting economic and security woes.

Clashes broke out in several cities, with Morsi's opponents attacking Brotherhood offices, setting fire to at least one. Protesters and Brotherhood members pelted each other with stones and firebombs in the Nile Delta city of Mahalla el-Kobra, leaving at least 100 people injured.

"Power has exposed the Brotherhood. We discovered their true face," said Laila Salah, a housewife at the Tahrir protest who said she voted for Morsi in last summer's presidential election. After Mubarak, she said, Egyptians would no longer accept being ruled by an autocrat.

"It's like a wife whose husband was beating her and then she divorces him and becomes free," she said. "If she remarries she'll never accept another day of abuse."

Gehad el-Haddad, a senior adviser to the Brotherhood and its political party, said Morsi would not back down on his edicts. "We are not rescinding the declaration," he told The Associated Press.

That sets the stage for a drawn-out battle that could throw the nation into greater turmoil. Protest organizers have called for another mass rally Friday. If the Brotherhood responds with demonstrations of its own, as some of its leaders have hinted, it would raise the prospect of greater violence after a series of clashes between the two camps in recent days.

A tweet by the Brotherhood warned that if the opposition was able to bring out 200,000 to 300,000, "they should brace for millions in support" of Morsi.

Another flashpoint could come Sunday, when the constitutional court is to rule on whether to dissolve the assembly writing the new constitution, which is dominated by the Brotherhood and its Islamist allies. Morsi's edicts ban the courts from disbanding the panel; if the court defies him and rules anyway, it would be a direct challenge that could spill over into the streets.

"Then we are in the face of the challenge between the supreme court and the presidency," said Nasser Amin, head of the Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession. "We are about to enter a serious conflict" on both the legal and street level, he said.

Morsi and his supporters say the decrees were necessary to prevent the judiciary from blocking the "revolution's goals" of a transition to democracy. The courts ? where many Mubarak-era judges still hold powerful posts ? have already disbanded the first post-Mubarak elected parliament, which was led by the Brotherhood. Now it could also take aim at the Islamist-led upper house of parliament.

Morsi's decrees ban the judiciary from doing so and grant his decisions immunity from judicial review. Morsi also gave himself sweeping powers to prevent threats to the revolution, stability or state institutions, which critics say are tantamount to emergency laws. These powers are to remain in effect until the constitution is approved and parliamentary elections are held, not likely before spring 2013.

Opponents say the decrees turn Morsi ? who narrowly won last summer's election with just over 50 percent of the vote ? into a new dictator, given that he holds not only executive but also legislative powers, after the lower house of parliament was dissolved.

Tuesday's turnout was an unprecedented show of strength by the mainly liberal and secular opposition, which has been divided and uncertain amid the rise to power of the Brotherhood over the past year. The crowds were of all stripes, including many first-time protesters.

"Suddenly Morsi is issuing laws and becoming the absolute ruler, holding all powers in his hands," said Mona Sadek, a 31-year-old engineering graduate who wears the Islamic veil, a hallmark of piety. "Our revolt against the decrees became a protest against the Brotherhood as well."

"The Brotherhood hijacked the revolution," agreed Raafat Magdi, an engineer who was among a crowd of some 10,000 marching from the Cairo district of Shubra to Tahrir to the beat of drums and chants against the Brotherhood. Reform leader Mohammed ElBaradei led the march.

"People woke up to (Morsi's) mistakes, and in any new elections they will get no votes," Magdi said.

Many in the crowd said they were determined to push ahead with the protests until Morsi retreats. A major concern was that Islamists would use the decree's protection of the constitutional assembly to drive through their vision for the next charter, with a heavy emphasis on implementing Shariah, or Islamic law. The assembly has been plagued with controversy, and more than two dozen of its 100 members have quit in recent days to protest Islamist control.

"Next Friday will be decisive," protester Islam Bayoumi said of the upcoming rally. "If people maintain the same pressure and come in large numbers, they could manage to press the president and rescue the constitution."

A fellow protester, Saad Salem Nada, said of Morsi: "I am a Muslim and he made me hate Muslims because of the dictatorship in the name of religion. In the past, we had one Mubarak. Now we have hundreds."

Even as the crowds swelled in Tahrir, clashes erupted nearby between several hundred protesters throwing stones and police firing tear gas on a street leading to the U.S. Embassy. Clouds of tear gas hung over the area, where clashes have broken out for several days, fueled by anger over police abuses.

A photographer working for the AP, Ahmed Gomaa, was beaten by stick-wielding police while covering the clashes. Police took his equipment and Gomaa was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Rival rallies by Morsi opponents and supporters turned into brief clashes in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, where anti-Morsi protesters broke into the local office of the Muslim Brotherhood, throwing furniture out the windows and trying unsuccessfully to set fire to it. Protesters also set fire to Brotherhood offices in the city of Mansoura.

Morsi's supporters canceled a massive rally planned for Tuesday in Cairo, citing the need to "defuse tension." Morsi's supporters say more than a dozen of their offices have been ransacked or set ablaze since Friday. Some 5,000 demonstrated in the southern city of Assiut in support of Morsi's decrees, according to witnesses there.

So far, there has been little sign of a compromise. On Monday, Morsi met with the nation's top judges and tried to win their acceptance of his decrees. But the move was dismissed by many in the opposition and the judiciary as providing no real concessions.

Saad Emara, a senior Muslim Brotherhood member, said Morsi will not make any concessions, especially after the surge of violence and assaults on Brotherhood offices.

Emara accused the opposition "of resorting to violence with a political cover," claiming that former ruling party and Mubarak-era businessmen were hiring thugs to attack Brotherhood offices with the opposition's blessing.

"The story now is that the civilian forces are playing with fire. This is a dangerous scene."

Simple formula can predict child obesity risk at birth

LONDON (Reuters) - A simple assessment can predict at birth a baby's likelihood of becoming obese during childhood, scientists said on Wednesday.

The formula, available as an online calculator, estimates the child's obesity risk based on its birth weight, the body mass index of the parents, the number of people in the household, the mother's professional status and whether she smoked during pregnancy.

Researchers who published a study of the test in the journal PLOS ONE say they hope it will be used to identify babies at high risk and help families take steps to stop them putting on too much weight before it's too late.

Childhood obesity is a leading cause of early type 2 diabetes, as well as various types of cardiovascular disease, and is becoming increasingly common in developed countries.

According to data from the American Heart Association, almost 18 percent of boys and almost 16 percent of girls aged between two and 19 in the United States are obese. In England, 17 percent of boys and 15 percent of girls aged between two and 15 are obese, according to National Health Service (NHS) data.

"Once a young child becomes obese, it's difficult for them to lose weight - so prevention is the best strategy and it has to begin as early as possible," said Philippe Froguel of Imperial College London, who led the study.

"Unfortunately, public prevention campaigns have been rather ineffective at preventing obesity in school-age children. Teaching parents about the dangers of over-feeding and bad nutritional habits at a young age would be much more effective."

Froguel's team developed the formula using data from a study set up in 1986 following 4,000 children born in Finland.

They were initially investigating whether obesity risk could be assessed using genetic profiles, but the test they developed based on common genetic variations failed to make accurate predictions. Instead, they found that non-genetic information available at the time of birth was enough to predict which children would become obese.

The formula proved accurate not just in the Finnish children they studied, but also in further tests using data from studies in Italy and the United States.

"This test takes very little time, it doesn't require any lab tests and it doesn't cost anything," Froguel said. The calculator is available at:

Although the team's work using common genetic variants did not prove to be helpful for predicting childhood obesity, they said about one in 10 cases of obesity are caused by rare mutations that seriously affect appetite regulation.

The researchers said tests for these types of mutations could become available to doctors in the next few years as the cost of DNA sequencing technology falls.

Obama to meet executives, go to Pennsylvania for fiscal push

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will launch a multipronged push this week to garner support for his proposals to solve U.S. fiscal problems, meeting with business executives at the White House and visiting a small business in Pennsylvania to press his case.

Obama has sought to go on the offensive since his re-election on November 6 in the fight with Republicans over the "fiscal cliff" - a combination of tax increases and spending cuts that would go into effect next year if the two sides do not reach a deal to stop it.

As part of that effort, the White House released a report on Monday showing the impact that middle class tax increases would have on consumers and the retail industry.

On Tuesday, a White House official said, the president will meet with a group of small-business owners. On Wednesday he will host an event with "middle class Americans who would be impacted if Congress fails to act to extend the middle class tax cuts," the official said. He will also hold a meeting with business leaders, something he has done previously.

On Friday, he will visit a manufacturing facility of The Rodon Group, a small business that is a manufacturer for K'NEX Brands, a toy company with products including Tinkertoy and Angry Bird Building Sets.

"The president will travel to Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, to continue making the public case for action by visiting a business that depends on middle class consumers during the holiday season, and could be impacted if taxes go up on 98 percent of Americans at the end of the year," the official said.

Obama's visit and his meetings at the White House are designed to put pressure on congressional Republicans to extend tax cuts for middle-income people while ending them for families who make more than $250,000 a year.

Gaining the support of the business community is a key part of Obama's strategy. Reinforcing that, the White House released an analysis by its National Economic Council that said millions of small-business owners would suffer if the middle class taxes went up next year.

Suburban Jubilee: Salads Have Seasons

I know many of you are food growers and many more of you are more than competent cooks but there are some people who still feel very constrained about a green salad. I meet at least a couple of them every market day. One lady stood in front of two of my huge full baskets of mixed lettuce leaf and asked me if I had any lettuce. I knew she had meant to say she was looking for an iceberg?lettuce?so I directed her to the shop across the street because you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.

There are others though whom I meet at the market who are embracing some new foods like rat tail radishes and garlic scape and using flower heads like chives, calendula and borage.

Sadly even my own mother said to me just last month "I can't have a salad without tomato"

Well yes you can, especially if they are not in season.

One of my favourite ways with a salad at this time of year is mixed leaf of young spinach, beet leaves and the last of the?Asian?green leaf with very lightly steamed potato dumped hot onto the leaves with a dollop of natural yoghurt and a spoon of mustard and left to cool and ever so?slightly?wilt the leaves.

Or like the salad above foraged from the garden; a couple of baby beets, some baby blue sapphire potatoes, a carrot, a few asparagus spears, all lightly steamed and then added to leaves with chopped garlic scape, raw young peas and wilted beet leaves.

It's still a salad.

How about a bowl of loose lettuce leaf (butter, curly, lollo and red coral) with Asian green flower heads, delicious chive petals, wilted beet stems, chopped rat tail radishes and two sliced eggs ready for a simple dressing of olive oil and lemon juice.

This is a salad too.

No iceberg, no tomatoes and no cucumbers ready yet either.

There is so much more excitement to be had from your food. It is important for your body to get many nutrients and it is also important to have bitters and raw greens in our diet that stimulate digestive action from the moment your tongue tastes it.

There is no need for heavy?seasoning?when you are sprinkling chopped garlic scape or chive flowers and there is a whole other world out there when you start adding some fresh herbs too. When the scape is gone and the chive heads are finished, it will be the season of basil.?

So when you come across a growers stall, open your mind and adjust your thinking from the classic supermarket shop and embrace the seasons as they ebb and flow offering new and exciting taste combinations. Be guided by your growers and what's in the garden now.

Banks Modify Home Loans, Reduce Rates for ... - AOL Real Estate

More than 300,000 homeowners have received $26 billion in relief under the big foreclosure abuse settlement reached earlier this year, according to a recent government report.

Five of the country's largest mortgage lenders have modified home loans, reduced interest rates or forgiven debt as part of a deal with attorneys general from 49 states and the District of Columbia, and the federal government.

The banks involved are Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citibank and Ally Financial.

The settlement, reached in February, resolved allegations that banks used faulty paperwork to seize homes. Among the worst abuses were robo-signers who signed thousands of legal documents attesting to facts they had no knowledge of.

The report was released by the Office of Mortgage Settlement Oversight, a watchdog agency set up by the settlement. The report is considered preliminary because the agency has not vetted the data provided by the banks; the agency will release an audited report in mid-2013.

"The relief the banks have reported is encouraging," said Joseph A. Smith Jr., the monitor of the mortgage settlement. "But it is important to remember that no obligations will be met until I have reviewed, confirmed and credited them."

The banks claim that 309,385 borrowers have received some kind of mortgage relief under the settlement. The total benefit of $26.11 billion represents an average of about $84,385 per borrower.

Some 21,833 borrowers completed loan modifications that lowered their mortgage debt by an average of $116,929 each. Another 30,967 borrowers have been granted trial modifications that, if completed, will cost the banks $4.19 billion, an average of $135,929 per borrower.

Home equity loans and lines of credits were modified or erased for more than 50,000 borrowers to the tune of $2.78 billion, or $55,534 for each one.

The lenders also reduced interest rates on 37,396 loans by an average of 2.34 percentage points, a total of $1.44 billion in payment relief. Borrowers will save an average of $409 a month.

All told, the banks have given more relief than the $25 billion settlement requires them to offer. But, Smith notes, the banks won't get credit under the settlement for all of the claims.

Here's why: Under the deal, the banks get full credit for reducing principal on first mortgages but only partial credit for some other fixes. But erasing home equity loans may earn banks as little as 10 cents on the dollar in credits. And forgiving missed payments to keep unemployed borrowers in their homes until they can resume payments may earn only 5 cents per dollar.

For their part, the banks are in some areas doing far more than anticipated. Principal reductions were expected to average about $20,000, but the actual reductions so far are about six times higher.

Only mortgages held by the banks or owned by investors who approve the modifications are eligible for relief under the settlement. That means that mortgages backed by the federal government agencies Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac are not included, nor are those insured by the Federal Housing Administration.
