New findings on men's genes could alter interpretation of PSA test

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? By studying a specific part of the male DNA, it may be possible to refine the interpretation of PSA tests. This would reduce the risk of men being treated for prostate cancer unnecessarily.

The findings have been presented in a thesis by Christel Bj?rk at Lund University, Sweden, who has carried out the study with her colleague Hannah Nenonen, supervised by researcher Yvonne Lundberg Giwercman.

A PSA test measures the level of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) in the blood, and raised PSA can signal an increased risk of cancer; however, this is not the case for everyone. The problem is that there is no good way to separate those with naturally high levels of PSA from those at increased risk of prostate cancer.

"If we know that a man has a naturally high level of PSA, this can be taken into account in a PSA test, and the patient may be able to avoid arduous treatment with a risk of side-effects," says Christel Bj?rk, a doctoral student at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University.

The present study shows how a man's genetic characteristics can affect the androgen receptor, a protein that has an important function in the male reproductive system. It regulates the effect of testosterone and controls production of prostate-specific antigen.

The researchers studied healthy men in different age groups and discovered a connection between PSA levels in the blood and DNA structure of the androgen receptor. The highest PSA levels were found in the men with the most common variant of the androgen receptor, i.e. the largest group of men.

"Both the PSA level and the genetic characteristics can be identified with a blood test," says Yvonne Lundberg Giwercman, Associate Professor at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University.

The study is based on samples from around 400 men from Sweden and Norway. Before the results can be implemented for PSA tests in the health service, the study must be repeated on a larger group.

"We have access to material covering around 3 200 men from seven European countries and the idea is to investigate whether our preliminary findings can be verified on this group in the near future," explains Yvonne Lundberg Giwercman.

writing a book | how it happened

Despite the fact that I just wrote a book I feel like I?m totally the wrong person to give advice to an aspiring author on how to get published. ?I thought it might be helpful, though, or at least interesting, for me to share my experience and the process. ?So, here we go?

I?ve shared before that I?ve never thought of myself as a writer. ?I was never good in English at school, disliked writing papers?immensely and have always been?lousy at spelling and grammar. ?I have always thought it would be fun to put together a decorating book, but that thought was the kind of thought you have like ? it would be so fun to own a horse farm or it would be fun to live in Paris. ?It?s something you talk about and think about, but it?s something other people do. ?Not you.

I started to think it might be possible once I started writing for HGTV.com. ?One of their editors sent me an e-mail out of the blue asking if I would write three tutorials for them. ?She liked the tutorials on my blog and gave me the chance to try things out as a freelance writer. ?They liked my work and offered more work. ? Success in that job turned the little thought that was easily dismissed before into something I started to dream about with the hope that it might happen some day.

As I dreamed about writing a book, ideas began to flow at a rapid rate and the idea of what my book would be started to take shape. ?I envisioned a book about my style with tutorials, tips and stories laced throughout. ?I decided to start writing it before I burst or the ideas were lost. ?So I started.

It was easy at first, but then I got bogged down in the layout of the book. ?I was trying to put together an e-book or one that would be self-published, because the idea of a publisher being interested in hiring me as an author was very?far-fetched?in my mind. ?I didn?t have any connections with a publisher and I had no clue even how to submit a manuscript. ?The e-book stalled. ?It just didn?t feel right. ?I felt strongly like I just needed to keep working on my blog, my freelance writing, my retail space and just let things happen naturally. ?If I never wrote a book? ?Fine. ?I didn?t want to miss the opportunities at my feet because I?m too busy trampling over them to get to the next thing.

In April of 2011, I walked in the house after a day of shopping with my mother-in-law. ?My business phone voice mail light was blinking. ?I picked up the phone and dialed to check the message. ?I was sort of half listening as the conversations of my family were buzzing around me. ?I had to play the message a second time, because I didn?t catch much. ?The second time, I caught the word publisher and immediately clapped my hand over my mouth. ?I rushed through the room to grab a piece of paper and pen and replayed the message a third time. By this point I was bubbling with excitement and could hardly hold myself still. ?I wrote down, ?Thomas Nelson?publisher?interested in book idea?? ?I hung up the phone, gathered myself and turned to my husband and father-in-law. ?(I think my mother-in-law had been?summoned?to play superheros with the boys during this time.)

I beamed at the two of them and tried to speak in a voice that wasn?t abnormally high-pitched and school-girlish. ??I just got a voice mail from a publisher who is interested in?me writing a book for them!!!? ?All composure was lost.

?Wow! ?Who?s the publisher??

?I don?t know. ?Umm?. ?Thomas something? ?Thomas Nelson.?

?OH WOW! ?Thomas Nelson! ?They?re big time.?

The guys then informed me how big time Thomas Nelson was. ?I returned their call immediately and had to settle for leaving a voice mail. ?I didn?t hear back until a couple of days later, which was torture, but an excellent?exercise?in patience and trusting God?s timing. ?I finally received the call (or perhaps we scheduled one) and we started to discuss my ideas. ?That turned into a conference call to discuss my ideas and their ideas. ?That turned into the discussion of details and proposals and blog statistics and demographics. ?It?s not enough if I have an idea and a few people at a publishing company who like the idea. ?It has to be proved that the idea can be turned into a book that will sell. ?This process took about six months.

I didn?t do a lot during that time except wait, answer questions and provide information. ?Well, I did a lot, but not related to the book. ?I just focused on my blog, freelance and retail work. ?In August 2011, I wrote a post about losing & finding myself. ?It had nothing to do with the possible book. ?I just wanted to share what was on my heart and the response was overwhelming. ?I don?t know how many followers I had at the time, but over 250 comments on a post without any pictures or tips or a makeover was a big deal. ?And it wasn?t just the volume of comments, but how heartfelt they were. ?Without meaning to, I had touched a nerve. ?The people at Thomas Nelson noticed. ?This post?this was the book I needed to write. ?It was your comments that made it clear.

The idea was refined and pitched again. ?The details were ironed out about the photography?I was going to be the photographer (gulp!!) ?The idea was accepted and in November of 2011, I received an offer from Thomas Nelson to write (and photograph) my first book. ?I was over-the-moon excited about it, but a knot was slowly growing in my stomach. ?What if I gave my best and people didn?t like it? ?Didn?t buy it? ?What about the criticism that comes with putting yourself out there? ?My husband took me for a car ride and I cried and poured out my fears. ?We prayed about it and, after a few days, decided to not make decisions based on fear.

I took a leap of faith and signed the contract.

Up next?

?the oh-crap-now-I-have-to-write-and-photograph-an-entire-book?moment.

Speaking of the book, I have some book signings/workshops coming up in November and I?m working on scheduling more. ?Check out my side bar for an updated listing and I?ll be posting more details tomorrow.

Tom Hanks tackles 'Full House' in poetry slam

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Tom Hanks sure has been making the rounds. Over the weekend he dropped by "Saturday Night Live," and recently he agreed to be interviewed by the Nerdist podcast thanks to a vintage typewriter being thrown in the mix.?

But he may have made his most surprising move Tuesday night, dropping by "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" to do a poetry slam on ... the 1990s sitcom "Full House"?

Yep, it happened. Maybe he was inspired by the 25th anniversary party the "Full House" gang threw for themselves last month, maybe not. But it was almost certainly the longest (over 3 minutes) poetry slam late night has seen in years.?

Done up in full bohemian poetry guy duds (that is, a black turtleneck) and oh-so-serious demeanor, the Oscar-winning Hanks strode onto the stage and stood in a spotlight reading lines like: "House full of men/Danny, Jesse, Joey/Father, Uncle Friend/Uncle Jesse whose hair is never messy/Watch the hair, huh?/Have mercy on Uncle Jesse."

He even gave the whole setup a bit of a sinister twist, wondering why there were no women in the house, only girls.?

African Kids Reach for the Stars With Help of US Astronomer

The beauty of space and the thrill of science have helped an American astronomer connect with children in Malawi, despite language and cultural barriers.

University of California, Riverside astronomer Gabriela Canalizo has spent seven consecutive summers teaching astronomy to kids ages five to 20 in an orphanage in the southeast African country. She brings a telescope and astronomy books, and she shows scientific videos of star clusters and galaxy collisions to the 220 children at Malawi's Passion Center for Children.

Canalizo hopes her visits encourage the children to stay in school, and to get excited about science.

"None of the orphanage's children and staff members had seen a telescope before I took one there," Canalizo said in a statement. "Still, they had excellent and imaginative questions.?For example, when I explained that stars eventually die, one child asked if the stars die because of disease. Some wanted to know how big the largest star is and how the moon got its craters. From the donated books, they have gotten to learn about Pluto and the other planets."

Canalizo has traveled with larger groups of volunteers from around the United States led by Pastor Eric Sythoff of the Crest Community Church in Riverside. Her first visit was in 2006.

Since then, the scientist has grown familiar with Malawi. She has learned some of the local language Chichewa, which is spoken in the region around the orphanage, and become accustomed to teaching in classrooms without desks and other basic school supplies.

"In the United States, we are much privileged in comparison, and are given much," Canalizo said.?"The trips to Malawi are an opportunity to share a little of our wealth of knowledge, our many and abundant resources.?I thoroughly enjoy working with the Malawian children. It's fascinating to see how eager they are to learn, to see how, with increasing knowledge, they have started to think about careers.?Already, four of the children I have worked with are in Malawian colleges now."

Malawi is home to about 16.3 million people. Roughly 11 percent of adults there have AIDS or HIV, which was the cause of 51,000 deaths in 2009, leading to a high population of orphans.

Canalizo said she formed many close relationships with the children at the Passion Center.

"They'll cry, 'Gaby! Gaby!' when they see me arriving at the orphanage," she said. "And every once in a while, some will call me 'Mom.'"

Obama's ground game makes Iowa tough turf for Romney

It's Election Day in Iowa, and it has been for weeks.

Recent polling in the state shows Republican Mitt Romney quickly closing the gap in the presidential race, but that may be less and less important with every day that passes. Political watchers say President Obama has been successful this year at getting his supporters to take advantage of Iowa's early voting system and that likely has given him a head start at a time when he still leads in the polls.

Pollster Ann Selzer, who runs the respected Des Moines Register survey, said there are signs that Iowans who have already cast a ballot are leaning heavily toward Obama.

"Two-to-one, people who say they have already voted are Barack Obama supporters," Selzer told TPM. "The majority of people who plan to vote early are Barack Obama supporters. The majority of people who plan to vote on election day, Romney supporters. I think that's what's gets tricky ? you have to have a huge margin on election day to offset the Democrats."

Early voting in Iowa began on Sept. 27, and already nearly 520,000 people requested early ballots, according to elections officials. Of those, some 347,000 had filled out and returned them as of Oct. 22.

In 2008, a little more than 1.5 million people voted in Iowa and the state's six electoral votes went to Obama by a solid 9.5 points. Few expect that sort of margin this time around, and polling throughout the summer suggested the state might be one of Romney's best pick-up opportunities.

"I think that [Romney's] early showing has a lot to do with there being a Republican caucus and nothing happening on the Democratic side," Selzer said. "You had a lot of Republican messages in this state, a lot of 'Fire Barack Obama' messages. ... So that had a lasting impact."

As the summer faded, Obama started to tick up in the state in September and October, even though current polling has been mixed.

"The reason Obama became stronger is two things ? first of all there are economic signals that things are getting better, and that became a little hard to ignore ... and I think Obama has in place a stronger ground game, and that is starting to pick up," Selzer said. "So all of the people that he had in place from four years ago, a lot of that infrastructure is still there. Romney sat out Iowa, really, and has chosen to have less presence in terms of a ground game ... and in Iowa, with so much early voting, that ground game is really critical."

And that could make all the difference in the state. Polls of late have been more cloudy -- President Obama held a solid 8-point lead in a NBC News/Marist College poll released Thursday, but Romney was up 49 percent to Obama's 48 percent in a survey from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling the day after. But among early voters ? a solid 34 percent of the NBC/Marist sample and 31 percent those polled by PPP ? two-thirds had already cast their ballots for the president, with a third going for Romney.

Overall, the PollTracker Average of Iowa shows Obama with a small lead.

"When likely voters intend to cast their ballot tells us a lot about what is happening in Iowa," Lee M. Miringoff, director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, said in a statement, citing the Obama advantage among early voters. "In contrast, Romney leads by double digits with those who will vote on Election Day."

That means a key for the Obama campaign will be to overwhelm the Republican ticket before Nov. 6 so that Election Day becomes somewhat a foregone conclusion.

Selzer pointed the youth vote. During the last month, President Obama, Vice President Biden and First Lady Michelle Obama have all campaigned on college campuses with an early voting station set up nearby. That allows the campaign to point supporters directly to the place where they can drop off their ballots before the buzz of the rally wears off.

Selzer said that kind of push could send early voter turnout to huge levels this year. Thirty-two percent of Iowa voters cast their ballots early in 2008 and 35 percent did in 2010. The question this year is whether it will approach 50 percent.

"If it's half, that will be jaw-dropping," Selzer said. "But it feels within the realm of possibility."

Ed. note: The post has been updated to reflect that the NBC/Marist and PPP polls showed two-thirds of early voters, not likely voters, had already cast their ballots for Obama.

CPT SAYS 48V INITIATIVE WILL HELP FACILITATE ENERGY ...

The UK-based low carbon engine technology specialist, Controlled Power Technologies (CPT), says that the new 48 volt standard proposed by leading automakers provides an ideal compromise for performance and cost in the development of a new generation of affordable super fuel efficient cars.??With global CO2 emission targets rapidly converging, the auto industry has only a decade to achieve almost another 30 per cent reduction by 2022 putting pressure on automakers to come up with innovative and affordable technical solutions.

?The convergence of global standards for fuel economy and CO2 emissions means that the auto industry will need to embrace exhaust gas energy recuperation as well as kinetic energy recovery by electro-mechanical means as the next major step for CO2 reduction,? says Nick Pascoe chief executive and chief technology officer at Controlled Power Technologies.?? Speaking on the eve of the Engine Expo international trade fair for automotive powertrain design and technology held at Novi in Michigan he commented.? ?Energy recuperation is the key to ground-breaking solutions that the motorist can afford and this has caused the industry to re-visit the previously mooted higher than 12 volts, but less than 60 volts, electrical architecture.? Mild electrification deploying a proposed 48 volt standard will be a major factor for enabling the required motor-generator efficiency and power levels.?

Pascoe says the industry has reckoned the additional cost to the motorist to achieve the required 30 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions is estimated at $1,500 for a family sized saloon.? This is significantly less than the $7,500 US federal subsidy for electric vehicles; an on cost that would seem to remain unavoidable unless there is a significant breakthrough to reduce battery cost.

CPT gained significant prominence and credibility in the industry last year when it sold its VTES electric supercharger business in December 2011 to Valeo for ?30 million.? An elite team of automotive engineers, originally established in the UK by Ford then Visteon, had worked on the technology for more than 10 years.? With extraordinary vision their switched-reluctance motor-generator technology was developed from the outset to be scalable to higher voltages.? The choice of a switched-reluctance electrical machine was also carefully researched.

CPT is similarly focused on bringing its closely related Cobra, SpeedStart and Tigers technology to market readiness.? Cobra is a water cooled electric supercharger for commercial vehicle and off highway applications.? SpeedStart is a powerful water cooled starter-motor and generator able to provide torque assist to the engine and harvest kinetic energy.? Tigers is a water cooled turbine integrated gas energy recovery system.

?Automakers have a broad palette of hybrid technology options,? says Pascoe.? ?Some however are more expensive than others.? Mild and full hybrid vehicles including plug-in hybrids, for example, operating between 200 and 600 volts, incur significant additional development and product costs to the automaker, which then have to be passed on to the consumer or absorbed by the OEM; hence the need for governments to subsidise electric vehicles. ?Consequently such hybrid and electric vehicles are unaffordable for most motorists even with government subsidies.?

The recuperation energy potential of a downsized gasoline engine equipped with a powerful water-cooled starter-motor and generator is significant says Pascoe.? At 48 volts SpeedStart is able to provide torque assist to the engine for acceleration, reduce fuelling during cruise conditions, and harvest kinetic energy during braking.? Brake energy alone is worth more than 60kJ/km accumulated over the New European Drive Cycle and is just waiting to be harvested.

?Not only does 48 volts provide a solution for more efficient powertrains, but also for meeting other increasing vehicle energy demands already exceeding the capabilities of a 12V/3kW alternator.? This includes electrically powered cooling fans, water pumps, and electric power assisted steering ? all part of hybridisation ? as well as improving passenger safety, security and comfort systems.? These higher power electrical devices would all benefit from higher voltage systems.? However, increasing the voltage beyond 60 volts requires much greater safety consideration leading to a significant increase in cost.? The specification for 48 volts is still evolving, and there may yet be more than one, but there is real pressure from global automakers to conclude the specification as quickly as possible,? says Pascoe.

Already developed for 12 volts, the CPT SpeedStart system is a powerful belt-driven starter-motor and generator with its control and power electronics fully integrated into the liquid cooled device.? It?s also the world?s first liquid cooled switched reluctance motor-generator developed for automotive stop-start.? Switched reluctance machines have the benefit of eliminating increasingly expensive rare earth materials used in permanent magnet motors, which currently predominate throughout the industry for alternators, conventional starter motors and first generation stop-start systems.

The CO2 and fuel economy benefits of 12 volt based stop-start combined with SpeedStart?s efficient high current electrical generation and regeneration can be as much as 20 per cent.? The driver benefits also include its high torque fast response, leading to a more desirable and comfortable stop-start with a unique ?Driver Change of Mind? capability to ensure that its operation is not intrusive to normal driving styles.?? The availability of this market ready technology is expected to be in the next generation of cars reaching dealer showrooms in 2015.

Meanwhile, CPT anticipates having a 48 volt SpeedStart technology demonstrator running in 2013.? Bench testing has indicated an increase in transient performance to 10kW of generation power, depending upon system specification.? And the motoring power through direct torque assist to the engine has similarly increased, though duration becomes a critical parameter.? The engine breakaway torque at zero rpm can also be increased to 95Nm ? enough to start even large automotive engines.

?A combination of electric launch assist, quasi-continuous electric motoring for fuelling optimisation, and energy recuperation with electric brake assist not only has a measurable impact on NEDC emissions but offers significant real world fuel economy,? says Pascoe.? ?However, this additional benefit can only be achieved at 48 volts.? Compared with our 12 volt LC Super Hybrid technology demonstrator based on a VW Passat 1.4 litre TSI model it would further reduce the CO2 emissions by 4 to 8 per cent, depending upon drivability targets, and the 0-60mph acceleration further reduced from nine seconds.? And this is for a large family saloon weighing 3,200lbs (1,450kg) with a small 1.4 litre gasoline engine delivering 42mpg US (50mpg imperial) fuel economy in our 12 volt demonstrator with performance already equivalent to a 2-litre turbocharged diesel engine costing at least $3,000 more.?

CPT will also next year secure the first vehicle installation of its turbine integrated gas energy recovery system known as TIGERS in a UK government Technology Strategy Board (TSB) co-funded project.? The ?Vehicle Integrated Powertrain Energy Recovery? project known as VIPER will build on CPT?s involvement in the Ricardo-led ?HyBoost? programme, which was similarly part funded by the TSB.? The VIPER project aims to develop more thermally efficient engines and technologies for thermal energy recovery.? The programme objectives will show how this can be achieved over a broad range of vehicles in part by optimising the control of heat energy from gasoline and diesel engines.? The VIPER project explores several technologies for recovering energy otherwise lost as waste heat, and is being led by Jaguar Land Rover.? Other consortium members include Ford, IAV, BP, Dana, the University of Nottingham and Imperial College London.

CPT is already successfully running TIGERS on an engine dynamometer at 650 degrees centigrade, which is close to the engine exhaust temperature of 800 degrees in a running vehicle.? The TIGERS system has a generating efficiency of more than 70 per cent and a maximum operating speed of 63,000rpm.? The liquid cooled generator is targeted to recover 2-4kW from an engine?s hot exhaust gases.? For a comparison with energy recuperation from electric brake assist this is equivalent to SpeedStart recuperating 40-75 per cent of the braking energy generated during an NEDC test.

The VIPER programme will compare the TIGERS installation with thermo electric generators (TEGs)where power levels and system cost remain major issues.? The TIGERS-V platform will also be used in the programme to develop a sensing system; a stator and rotor design for continuous steady state operation; low pressure ratio high efficiency turbine optimisation; and bypass system design and development.

CPT?s low cost solutions for CO2 reduction are being exhibited this week at the Engine Expo at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, where the company will be presenting its technology on booth E218.? The show runs from Tuesday to Thursday 23-25 Oct.

In addition, CPT?s 12V demonstrator is being shipped to the US for evaluation by US automakers and will also be presented at the Battery Show next month at the same exhibition venue in Novi.? The car will be displayed by Exide Technologies, which has supplied the advanced lead-carbon batteries.?? Representing the state of the art in affordable CO2 reduction, the LC Super Hybrid was first unveiled at the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show.? The technology demonstrator is helping to define a whole new class of low cost micro-mild hybrid vehicles.? The car has been developed in cooperation with the Advanced Lead-Acid Battery Consortium, an international research group based in the US in North Carolina, which has funded the vehicle and is also exhibiting at the Battery Show.

Based on a series production 1.4-litre turbocharged VW Passat TSI model ? generally considered an industry benchmark for fuel economy in this size of vehicle ? the LC Super Hybrid is already providing carmakers with real world validation of CPT?s pioneering and innovative technical achievements.?? The technologies comprise a VTES electric supercharger, SpeedStart belt-integrated starter generator with an advanced belt tensioning system, new PbC lead-carbon batteries, which avoid the need for higher cost battery technologies or super-capacitors, and higher gear ratios to reduce engine speed.

Recalibration of the engine increases power from 122 to 142PS and torque from 200 to 275Nm.? This power and torque is comparable with VW?s bigger 1.8-litre TSI gasoline engine, which delivers 160PS and 250Nm, and the engine output of the LC Super Hybrid is generally equivalent to vehicles in the 2-litre class.? Despite the enhanced gasoline engine performance the vehicle achieves near diesel levels of fuel economy, but with substantially lower production costs.

The impressive performance and excellent fuel economy are underscored by the acceleration figures and results measured on the standard European drive cycle.? The LC Super Hybrid delivers CO2 emissions of less than 130g/km compared with 140g/km for the baseline Passat 1.4-litre TSI, which is already best in class, and an even more significant reduction when compared with 160g/km for the equivalent performance 1.8-litre TSI model.? This represents a reduction in CO2 emissions of 8 and 23 per cent respectively.? Similarly, the excellent fuel economy of 5.6 litres/100km (42mpg US/50mpg imperial) represents a significant 11 and 24 per cent improvement respectively when compared with 6.2 litres/100km (38mpg US/46mpg imperial) for the 1.4-litre TSI and 6.9 litres/100km (34mpg US/41mpg imperial) for the 1.8-litre TSI also measured over the NEDC drive cycle.

The technology incorporated into the LC Super Hybrid, which has taken 10 years of research to develop, has achieved its technical breakthrough in the cost effective reduction of CO2 emissions and fuel consumption without compromising the fun-to-drive factor and high energy density fuel tank range advantage of gasoline engines.? The demonstrator embraces low voltage switched reluctance (SR) motor-generators, which are not currently employed by the automotive industry in mass production.?? The motors are of simple robust construction using steel, aluminium and copper and avoid the use of increasingly expensive rare earth materials required for permanent magnet motors. ?The SR technology is licensed from Nidec Corporation of Japan, one of the world?s leading suppliers of electric motors.

Controlled Power Technologies (CPT) is an independent, award winning, clean-tech company specialising in the development of cost-effective CO2 reduction measures for the global automotive industry that avoid major redesign of the powertrain or vehicle electrical system.? Its core competencies include low voltage power electronics, advanced control software and the application of low voltage electrical machines to vehicle powertrains.? The company is a spin-off from the advanced powertrain development team established in the UK more than 10 years ago by Visteon, a spin out from Ford, when electric supercharging and switched reluctance motor technology was first mooted, and its technology development partner Emerson Corporation, whose motor business has since been acquired by Nidec.??CPT was established in 2007 as a management buy-in funded by venture capital to acquire this advanced powertrain business.? The company comes with a highly experienced team of automotive engineers and is backed by a number of prominent investors specialising in the energy and environmental sectors.?? Decline of Working Class Sport ? Gucci Little Piggy

Posted by C.R. on 10/23/2012

My interest in the prole/elite dynamic at Yankee Stadium and within professional sports in general led me to research on the working class roots of English professional soccer and the evolution of attending crowds (mentioned here by Steve Sailer):

Shouting for your team in a rickety, windswept stadium, then drinking a few pints in the club and conducting a post-mortem on defeat or reliving a famous victory: this was the essence of Saturday afternoons in small town England and Scotland for decades. It lasted until the nineteen sixties, when the television boom and off-course betting gave working men something else to do on a Saturday afternoon. The seventies saw a switch in family values which meant that the football match no longer figured top of the list of Saturday priorities for many men, and the hooligan explosion of the late seventies and eighties further cut back the numbers of those prepared to endure cold fingers, poor toilet facilities [sometimes none for women] and a barrage of foul language in order to shout for their local team. The recent resurgence in the numbers attending football matches has come about as a result of safer and more comfortable grounds and the almost total disappearance of the hooligan problem. It has also, however, signalled a shift in the social backgrounds of those attending. Along with an increase in the numbers of women at matches, there are notably more middle-income people attending, and most clubs now have family stands, where parents accompanying children can sit in reserved accommodation. This is, in many ways, a welcome change, and the image of football has had a facelift over the last three years which would have been unimaginable as recently as the crisis-ridden nineteen-eighties, which saw many lifelong football fans give up going to the game in the wake of the disasters at Heysel and Hillsborough, among others. It has also, however, taken football away from its working-class origins, and there are many in the North who feel that the game has been usurped by the middle-class entrepreneur. This perhaps accounts in some measure for the fact that many youngsters in Lancashire and Yorkshire have switched their allegiance to rugby league, the other great working-class pastime of northern England.

And later in the piece:

Although there was still a spirit of rational recreation in working-class sport, it had taken new directions by the end of the century. The combination of benevolence from a ?kindly? ruling class and a desire for an orderly and healthy workforce had led to initiatives from factory owners such as the provision of after-hours sports clubs for the men and, albeit rarely, organised day-trips to the seaside or to the country.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a pro-union guy I met at a local Occupy Wall Street protest I was observing.? The guy, who was dressed up as Benjamin Franklin, theorized (a la ?Bowling Alone? though he didn?t mention the book) that bowling took off in the ?Golden Era? 1950s and 1960s as men who worked in factories and where naturally part of unions formed league teams in order to escape the toil of their jobs and the families that naturally followed from these jobs.? While bowling alleys of the working-class mold have mostly disappeared (the only bowling alleys that exist cater to kids with full arcades and ?cosmic bowling? specials and curbs and such; not like the old grease-monkey bowling alleys where the mechanical behind-the-scenes activities were front-and-center to the bowling experience), softball leagues have sprouted up in their place, probably because they can be played in public parks or recreational complexes rather than at places of business which have overhead i.e. electricity and labor costs.

Virginia or Bust: California to Arizona

Yesterday, we loaded up the car, took one last look around, wiped away tears, and left San Francisco. I had to bite my lip to keep my sobs locked in ? I didn?t want the boys to see how upset I was. All week, I?d been selling them on the adventure and how wonderful everything will be for us in Virginia. I didn?t want them to know that I?m scared and nervous, and that there are times when I doubt this whole crazy decision.

But no matter how unsure I am, I?m even more convinced this is the right thing for our family, if that makes sense. Bug has been re-energized by a job that is already challenging him in a good way. He has a spring in his step and is just generally excited again. Pudge is actually ? and this shocked me ? looking forward to going to traditional school. In fact, he was supposed to stay in San Francisco for another six weeks with his grandparents, but decided at the last minute to come with us. The Fox will fly out and meet us on Sunday night, but he?s looking forward to decorating the new house for Halloween and having kids trick-or-treat at our house (In twelve years, we?ve never had a trick-or-treater in San Francisco!). And The Colonel, well, he doesn?t care as long as there are cookies, a bed, and his family on the other end.

We?re taking the southern route to Virginia and so far, it hasn?t been very scenic. I?d wanted to get a picture of the ?Welcome to Arizona? sign, but we rolled past at 9pm and there was no where to stop.

Today, we?re driving to Albuquerque, New Mexico. After yesterday?s ten hour drive, the seven hours should fly by?

Microsoft expands subsidized Xbox 360 offer to 250GB model, from $99

Microsoft expands subsidized Xbox 360 offer to 250GB model, from $99

Microsoft has thrown an additional two Xbox 360 models into its subsidized subscription deal. Accompanying the original 4GB console at $99, a 250GB option will also be priced at $99, accompanied by two years of Xbox LIVE Gold at $15 per month. Throw in a Kinect, and this rises to $149, initially. The company hasn't revealed whether the new models will be accompanied by additional retailers alongside Best Buy and Gamestop, but there is a holding page that promises to offer a "full list of participating retailers" soon.

COPD readmission may be tied to unmodifiable risk factors

COPD readmission may be tied to unmodifiable risk factors [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 22-Oct-2012

National efforts are underway to reduce 30-day readmission for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); however, new research suggests that COPD readmissions may be related to risk factors that cannot be modified, including advanced disease and psychosocial factors.

Researchers from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston performed a retrospective chart review of all patients with primary discharge diagnosis of COPD. Of the 160 patients admitted for a total of 193 hospitalizations, 30 patients were readmitted within 30 days. Patients who were readmitted were more likely to be black, had congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, history of alcohol abuse, and were using supplemental oxygen. There was no difference in baseline medication use, length of stay, or serum bicarbonate values, and whether or not the patient had a follow-up postdischarge. In a multivariate analysis, odds of 30-day readmission was 2.56 in patients using supplemental oxygen, and 2.17 in patients with alcohol abuse. Researchers conclude that 30-day readmission in patients with COPD was related to advanced disease and psychosocial factors that are unlikely to be modifiable. This study was presented during CHEST 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held October 20 25, in Atlanta, Georgia.
