Liz Carmouche Signs To UFC, Becomes First Openly Gay Fighter

Liz Carmouche may know how to knock out her opponents, but now she's knocking down social barriers as the first openly gay fighter in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

MMA fighter Carmouche signed to the UFC on Thursday. She is the first openly gay fighter in the organization, The Atlantic reports.

The UFC has had a history tainted with anti-gay sentiment, and some see her joining as a sign of progress.

"While it's doubtful that openly gay male fighters will be given the same welcome anytime soon, Carmouche involvement is still a sign of progress," Jezebel's Madeleine Davies writes. "Maybe one day soon, everyone ? gay, straight or bi, male, female or trans ? will be given equal opportunity to beat the crap out of one another."

The 28-year-old former Marine has struggled to get to where she is today.

Serving in Iraq during the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" era as a closeted lesbian, Carmouche was surrounded by anti-gay sentiment, not only coming from her superiors, but also her friends, she recently revealed to Sports Illustrated.

At the time, the MMA fighter was struggling with her identity. "There was nothing positive in terms of anything homosexual," she said. "Anyone they suspected of being gay, they automatically treated as a scapegoat."

After her service, Carmouche walked into the San Diego Combat Academy and said she wondered if fellow fighters would accept her for who she really is.

"I thought, of all things, a male-dominated sport and a sport where you're engaging in this physical combat, that I was definitely going to come across that," she told MMAFighting.com in July. "I thought I'd come into contact with some stereotypical person who's anti-homosexuality, whether it be men or women. But I found the opposite. All they care about is a good, quality person who's a good training partner. Apart from that, what you do with your personal life, they really don't care."

She continues to stay true to herself, refusing to sacrifice her identity for advertising dollars, telling Sports Illustrated that "there's no amount of money that's going to make me go back in the closet."

Getting to the point of acceptance as an MMA fighter and a gay woman was not easy. "It was really difficult," she told MMAFighting. "I wouldn't say I came out so much as I came into my own. I really discovered what my sexuality meant to me and what that meant to me as a person."

These days, she is focusing on one thing: fighting Ronda Rousey.

On Feb. 23, Carmouche will face Rousey in the UFC's first-ever female fight at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., the New York Post reported. Rousey was awarded the first UFC women?s championship belt after the UFC bought out and shut down a rival promotion and launched its own women's division.

Egypt protesters march on palace

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's political crisis spiraled deeper into bitterness and recrimination Friday as thousands of Islamist backers of the president vowed vengeance at a funeral for men killed in bloody clashes earlier this week and large crowds of the president's opponents marched on his palace to increase pressure after he rejected their demands.

The two camps in the country's divide appeared at a deadlock, after President Mohammed Morsi gave a fiery televised speech Thursday night denouncing his opponents and refusing to call off a referendum on a draft constitution promulgated by his allies, even as he appealed for dialogue. The opposition rejected talks, saying he must first cancel the referendum and meet other demands.

With Egypt's crisis now in its third week, anger was mounting in the streets, after the two camps clashed Wednesday in heavy battles outside the presidential palace that left at least six dead and more than 700 injured.

Each side is depicting the conflict as an all-out fight for Egypt's future and identity. The opposition accuses Morsi and his Islamist allies of turning increasingly dictatorial to force their agenda on the country, monopolize power and turn Egypt to a religious state. The Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, and other Islamists say the opposition is trying to use the streets to overturn their victories in elections over the past year and stifle popular demands to implement Islamic Shariah law.

The tone was one of a battle cry as thousands of Islamists held funeral prayers Friday at Al-Azhar Mosque ? the country's premier Islamic institution ? for Morsi supporters killed in Wednesday's clashes. Seeking to rally their side, a series of speakers to the crowd portrayed the opposition as tools of the regime of ousted leader Hosni Mubarak ? or as decadent and un-Islamic ? and vowed to defend a constitution they say brings Islamic law to Egypt.

"Egypt is Islamic, it will not be secular, it will not be liberal," the crowd chanted in a funeral procession filling streets around the mosque. During the funeral, thousands chanted, "With blood and soul, we redeem Islam," pumping their fists in the air. Mourners yelled that opposition leaders were "murderers."

One hardline cleric speaking to the crowd denounced anti-Morsi protesters as "traitors." Another declared that they will not allow Egypt to become "a den of hash smokers."

"We march on this path in sacrifice for the nation and our martyrs," a leading Brotherhood figure, Mohammed el-Beltagy, told the crowd. "We will keep going even if we all become martyrs. We will avenge them or die like them.

"Bread! Freedom! Islamic Law!" the crowd chanted, twisting the revolutionary slogan of "Bread! Freedom! Social Justice!" used by leftists and secular activists in the 2011 uprising against Mubarak.

At the same time, thousands of protesters against Morsi streamed in several marches from different parts of Cairo toward his presidential palace in an upscale neighborhood for a third straight day. Many were furious over the president's speech the night before in which he accused "hired thugs" of attacking protesters outside the palace Wednesday, sparking the clashes. Most witnesses say the clashes began with Morsi supporters attacked a tent camp set up by anti-Morsi protesters.

A series of video clips surfaced the days following the bloody Wednesday, showing badly bruised faces of female activists, a man putting his hand over the mouth of prominent female activist Shahanda Mekalad to try to silence her as she chanted "we are the Egyptian people," and other anti-Morsi protesters stripped naked and beaten up by the Morsi supporters. One protester was pictured with a bloodstained shirt and a bruised face.

Wednesday's battles have only fed into mistrust between Islamists in power and liberal opposition.

At the rings of barbed wire outside the palace, protesters chanted, "Leave, leave," and "the people want the fall of the regime," while trying to remove the wire. Republican Guards intervened on Thursday for the first time, posting tanks around the palace and stringing barbed wire. Morsi attended weekly Friday prayers at the Republican Guards' mosque near the palace ? after he was denounced by worshippers last week at a mosque near his home in a Cairo suburb where he often prays.

Morsi has been hit by a string of resignations by some of his top aides protesting the week's violence. Criticism is also growing from Egyptian journalists, including those working for state-run news organizations, over what they say are attempts by Islamists to control the media.

Ultraconservative Islamists known as Salafis rallied Friday in front of Egypt's Media City south of Cairo to protest media coverage by privately owned networks they say is being used as a propaganda machine against the faithful.

Led by lawyer-turned-cleric Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail, with his trademark long, gray beard, the Salafis raised black flags and signs reading "hypocritical media," and brought bedspreads for a prolonged sit-in. Anti-riot police were deployed to the area.

The National Salvation Front, the main opposition umbrella group, blasted Morsi's speech, saying he was "surprisingly in denial to facts that millions of people in Egypt and around the world have seen" ? that the violence Wednesday came from "clear and blatant instigation by leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, from which the president hails."

In a statement Friday, the group repeated its rejection of Morsi's call for dialogue saying he must first meet their demands. The opposition says Morsi must rescind decrees he issued last month giving himself sweeping powers and neutralizing the judiciary and cancel the planned Dec. 15 referendum on the draft constitution.

"After the bloodshed, we will not put our hands in the hands of those who killed new martyrs," Hamdeen Sabahi, a leading figure in the National Salvation Front, told protesters gathered Friday in central Tahrir Square.

The April 6 movement, which played a key role in sparking the uprising against Mubarak, called its supporters to gather at mosques in Cairo and the neighboring city of Giza to march to the palace. They termed Friday's march a "red card" for Morsi, a reference to a football referee sending a player off the field for a serious violation.

Rival protests also took place in cities around the country, including in the cities of Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast and Luxor in the south. The two sides pelted each other with stones outside the headquarters of the Brotherhood office in Nile Delta city of Kom Hamada, in the province of Beheira. In the Delta industrial city of Mahallah, protesters cut railroads stopping trains and announcing a sit in until cancelation of Morsi's decrees and the referendum.

In the southern city of Assiut, hundreds of protesters marched chanting, "Down with the rule of the General Guide," referring to the head of the Muslim Brotherhood. "No Brotherhood, no Salafis, Egypt is a civic state," they said. Mohammed Abdel Ellah one of the protests' coordinators said that the secular groups are organizing street campaigns against the draft constitution to get the public to vote "no" if it comes to a referendum.

"We explain the draft to the people so they won't be fooled in the poison in honey," he said.

At the same time, Muslim preachers in Assiut mosques called on worshippers to support Morsi. One cleric in the nearby village of Qussiya denounced the opposition as "those with wicked hearts" and "enemies of God's rule."

"The enemies of the president are enemies of God, Shariah and legitimacy" another preacher said, adding that it is prohibited to protest against the ruler.

Too good to be true

By Jouni Sarkijarvi

I did not remember having seen the box before. But there it was, in my bathroom. Innocent looking, the size of a shoe box. But it wasn't.

It was light, obviously empty. I would have opened it, but there was nothing to open.

I put it aside. Absentmindedly, gathering the laundry, I dropped a sock on it. It disappeared through the lid.

I pushed with my finger, but the lid remained closed.

OK, now I know where the socks vanish, leaving the other one of the pair.

Then I tried an apple, and the box swallowed it. Silently.

I took my garbage basket and emptied it to the box. Easier than taking it out.

The garden waste followed.

Soon I was making money with my box. Sewage sludge - gone. Hazardous waste - gone. But nothing that was alive: the box would not accept it. Good for my finger.

Think big: what else?

Then I got it. CO2. Could it save a planet with a climate going rampant?

It could. Carbon dioxide was faster to deliver and clean, not messy. You collect it, I come with my box and whisk it away. Money out of the air. And the fame.

Then one morning, a gnome woke me up. Or something like that, not human, anyway. Slightly transparent, like a 3D-projection.

"You are late in your payments."

"?"

"Your All-Purpose Mini Black Hole. We have not received a single unit. And don't say your check is in the mail."

"I don't recall having ordered it. I just found it. And I didn't even know what it is."

Silence. Five seconds.

"My apologies for waking you up. Our mistake. The first ever. And this item could not even be supplied to this planet."

"That's OK. You'll take it back, of course?" "Not yet. In accordance to the universal consumer rights, we have to restore your processed deposits first. Please find a suitable place for it, about the size of the Sahara. You have 24 hours. Thank you for your cooperation."

(AP) ? Kobe Bryant scored 29 points, making him the fifth player in NBA history to score 30,000, and the Los Angeles Lakers snapped a two-game skid with a 103-87 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday night.

Bryant entered the game needing only 13 points to eclipse the scoring milestone and did so with a short jumper late in the first half that was perhaps the least spectacular of his baskets, which included the usual array of soaring dunks, demoralizing transition 3-pointers and turnaround, off-balance jumpers.

Dwight Howard added 18 points and five blocked shots for the Lakers, who trailed 48-47 at halftime but seized control with a 13-0 run to open the third quarter, and the lead grew as large as 20 in the fourth.

Ryan Anderson scored 31, hitting 5 of 8 3-pointers for the Hornets, who were playing their ninth straight game without top overall draft choice Anthony Davis. Greivis Vasquez added 16 points, while Robin Lopez scored 15 points and blocked five shots.

Antawn Jamison scored 15 and Metta World Peace 11, and Chris Duhon had 10 assists for Los Angeles, which is playing without Steve Nash and Pau Gasol and won for only the second time on the road this season. The Hornets fell to 3-7 at home and lost for the 10th time in 12 games overall.

The Hornets led from early in the first quarter until halftime, going up by as many as eight points when Al-Farouq Aminu slammed down an alley-oop lob from Vasquez, energizing the largest crowd of the season at the New Orleans Arena.

Bryant helped the Lakers trim their deficit after that, hitting five free throws and his milestone on 3-foot jumper in the last 2:15 of the second quarter.

Jamison opened the third-quarter onslaught with 3, Howard followed with a fast-break layup and Bryant had two straight fast-break dunks, one of which he created himself with a steal.

Howard finished the surge with a layup.

Anderson's shooting helped the Hornets pull to 70-62 late in the third period, but Bryant hit an 18-footer and Jodie Meeks added one of his three 3-pointers to give Los Angeles a 13-point lead heading into the final period. Meeks and Darius Morris then added 3s early in the period and New Orleans could not recover.

Notes: NBA Commissioner David Stern attended the game and said he was happy to be in attendance for Bryant's milestone moment, even if the scheduling was pure coincidence. Stern was making a regularly scheduled visit with first-year Hornets owner Tom Benson, who is also the owner of the NFL's Saints, to see how Benson's plans for the NBA franchise were taking shape. Stern visited Saints headquarters, where new construction has begun on additions that will also accommodate Hornets offices and practice courts. Stern said he wanted to shake hands with Bryant after the game. "As a talent, a competitor, I think that he is up there on the pedestal with Michael Jordan. He is one of the greatest." ... Stern also discussed the possibility of a team name change, something Benson has said he wants since buying the club last spring. Stern says the club has not yet applied for a name change but that the league would likely accept whatever name the Hornets want and expedite the transition.

Designs unveiled for Tappan Zee Bridge over New York's Hudson

(Reuters) - Three highly distinctive designs for a new Tappan Zee Bridge spanning the Hudson River in New York were unveiled on Wednesday, ranging from designs that resemble two pairs of tuning forks, a regatta, and a cream-colored version of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.

The New York State Thruway Authority unveiled the proposals for a new bridge connecting Westchester and Rockland counties north of New York City to replace the existing Tappan Zee, which was built in the 1950s and is now in poor condition.

Proposal 1, which looks like side-by-side tuning forks, is the least costly at $3.1 billion and earned the endorsement of a selection committee making recommendations to the Thruway Authority Board, which is to choose a design on December 17.

"Best looking and most cost-effective," said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, describing Proposal 1 at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

The selection committee's endorsement was based on price, bridge lifespan, construction schedule and environmental effects, according to Brian Conybeare, a special adviser for the project.

Proposal 2, which looks a bit like the Golden Gate, has an estimated cost of $3.990 billion, and Proposal 3, which resembles a crowd of sail boats racing in one of the regattas often seen on the Hudson, is estimated at $4.059 billion.

Proposal 1 also has the shortest construction time frame, at just over five years, meaning the new bridge could be completed before 2019.

With any of the three options, there would be $600 million to $800 million in additional costs related to project finance, management, oversight, contingencies and aesthetic improvements, Conybeare said.

In the hopes of insuring the massive transportation link reflects the beauty of the Hudson River Valley, Cuomo in September named a team of six artists to advise the selection team, including sculptor Jeffrey Koons and Metropolitan Museum of Art director Thomas Campbell, a tapestries expert.

The names of the design firms that created each proposal were not released by the state.

Get the Wii U Experience with the Smartphone You Already Have

Get the Wii U Experience with the Smartphone You Already HaveDespite its shortcomings, the Nintendo Wii U brought about a fun new way to play games that combines a handheld personal screen with your television set. But chances are you've already got a smartphone and don't necessarily want to shell out another $300 or more for a console. The good news? You can get the Wii U experience on the smartphone you already have with the help of a few apps.

Your smartphone wasn't designed to operate like the Wii U, but that doesn't mean it can't. The folks over at Apartment Therapy Tech figured out a few ways to emulate the experience. We have a few more. Read on for information about your specific device.

iPhone (and Other iDevices)

Get the Wii U Experience with the Smartphone You Already HaveA number of recent iDevices (such as the iPhone 4S and 5, iPad 3, 4, and mini, and the iPod touch 5G) support AirPlay mirroring, which allows you to send your mobile's screen over to a television or computer. This means you can use your device like a controller but see the game on the big screen as well. As Apartment Therapy Tech points out, this is very easy to accomplish if you already have an Apple TV as it acts like a receiver. All you have to do is send your device's signal to it using these steps:

  1. Double-press your device's home button to bring up the multitasking bar.
  2. Swipe from left to right (twice on an iPhone or iPod touch) to gain access to the volume controls.
  3. Tap the AirPlay icon.
  4. Choose an AirPlay receiver, such as the AppleTV.
  5. Proceed to play a game!

Of course, not all games work perfectly with AirPlay Mirroring, but you can find out which ones are supported here.

What do you do if you don't have an Apple TV? You can still mirror your device on your Mac or Windows PC with a handy app called AirServer. It acts as a receiver for AirPlay video on your computer, just like the Apple TV. As far as your iDevice knows, it is. You connect to it using the same steps outlined above.

Also, as warp100 pointed out, you can do this over HDMI if you don't mind being tethered. All you need is an Apple Digital AV connector either for the 30-pin dock connector or new lightning port.

Android

Get the Wii U Experience with the Smartphone You Already HaveAndroid doesn't have a feature exactly like AirPlay Mirroring, but that doesn't mean you can't use your phone or tablet for a Wii U-like gaming experience. For starters, Apartment Therapy Tech suggests using WanderPlayer, as it will turn your mobile into a controller for PC-based games. Alternatively, if you want true mirroring, you can pick up an nScreen which connects your TV and mirrors your Android's screen (using the nScreen Mirroring app, that is). Of course, many Android devices simply support HDMI output. If you don't mind wiring it to your television set, you can play on your Android and your TV no problem. For more on all the great things you can do over HDMI with your Android, check out our guide.
