Carbon emissions are 'too high'

It is increasingly unlikely that global warming will be kept below an increase of 2C (3.6F) above pre-industrial levels, a study suggests.

Data show that global CO2 emissions in 2012 hit 35.6bn tonnes, a 2.6% increase from 2011 and 58% above 1990 levels.

The researchers say that emissions are the largest contributor to future climate change and a strong indicator of potential future warming.

The findings have been published in the journal Nature Climate Change.

Meanwhile, the data has been published in the journal Earth System Science Data Discussions.

Many low-lying nations have used the UN conference, which is currently under way in Doha, to call for a threshold temperature rise less than 2C, arguing that even a 2C rise will jeopardise their future.

"These latest figures come amidst climate talks in Doha, but with emissions continuing to grow, it's as if no-one is listening to the scientific community," said Corinne Le Quere, director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia.

"I am worried that the risks of dangerous climate change are too high on our current emissions trajectory," Prof Le Quere said.

"We need a radical plan."

The researchers' paper says the average increases in global CO2 levels were 1.9% in the 1980s, 1.0% in the 1990 but 3.1% since 2000.

Recently, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported that greenhouse gases in the atmosphere hit a new record high in 2011.

In its annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin, the organisation said that carbon dioxide levels reached 391 parts per million in 2011.

The report estimated that carbon dioxide (CO2) accounted for 85% of the "radiative forcing" that led to global temperature rises.

Other potent greenhouse gases such as methane also recorded new highs, according to the WMO report.

Third major storm moving into Northern California

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Another major storm moving into Northern California was expected to bring more pouring rain, flooding and additional problems to an area already soaked after two major storms, forecasters said Saturday.

Residents of Northern California enjoyed just a bit of a respite, but the next storm ? the third in a string of powerful weather systems to hit the region since Wednesday ? is expected to force at least two rivers over their banks after it arrives Saturday evening, National Weather Service hydrologist Mark Strudley said.

With rivers and streams already running high and the ground saturated from the previous storms, the National Weather Service issued flood warnings for both the Napa and Russian rivers, two rivers north of San Francisco with a history of flooding.

"Some roads will become inundated and some of the agricultural areas will take on some water," Strudley said.

The Napa River was expected to flood near St. Helena and Napa around noon on Sunday, while the Russian River was expected to flood near Guerneville early Monday morning, Strudley said.

A flash flood watch was also in effect for a wide area of Northern California through Sunday evening.

At the peak of Friday's storm, thousands of people were without power, but by Saturday Pacific Gas & Electric was reporting only scattered outages, spokesman J.D. Guidi said.

The utility had extra crews standing by in anticipation of new outages caused by falling branches and strong winds, Guidi said.

Friday's stormy weather may be behind a crash that involved several cars on Interstate 280 outside of San Francisco on Saturday morning, as well as the death of a Pacific Gas & Electric worker in West Sacramento who was killed after his truck crashed into a traffic signal pole during the stormy weather Friday.

With the ground saturated with water, increasing the possibility of trees and branches falling onto roadways, and the roads expected to be slick, California Highway Patrol officials urged drivers to be extra cautious.

Officials were also warning people to be careful along beaches.

A high surf advisory was issued by the weather service, with swells expected to be 14 to 16 feet along the Northern California coast. In Southern California, high surf was predicted in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.

In San Diego, the Ocean Beach Municipal Pier was closed because of big waves and high tides.

Elsewhere in the West, a state of emergency was declared in Reno, Sparks and Washoe County in Nevada due to expected flooding as a storm packing heavy rain and strong winds swept through the area.

Reno city spokeswoman Michele Anderson said public servants would be working overtime through the weekend to control what's expected to be the worst flooding there since 2005. The National Weather Service issued a flood warning along the Truckee River.

The weather also prompted cancellations of Christmas parades and tree lightings in Sparks and Truckee, just across the border from California.

Also, a storm rushed through southern Oregon this week, lingering inland over the Rogue Valley and dropping record rainfall. Forecasters said the region should expect more storms over the next few days.

PST: Galaxy show stars matter in MLS Cup win

CARSON, Calif. ? So much of the talk in bigger sports circles will be about David Beckham finishing his MLS career with a flourish, with a 3-1 win at the Home Depot Center. But the moment clearly also belongs to the Galaxy, to Landon Donovan and Omar Gonzalez and the rest.

Here are the five important points to be gathered from the 17th MLS Cup, where Bruce Arena?s Los Angeles Galaxy successfully defended its MLS Cup title.

The stars do matter

In the early DP years, the narrative was built that MLS teams could still win without the pricey Designated Players who were slowly being added to rosters. But now, with the most DPed-up of MLS sides claiming a second consecutive Major League Soccer crown, it?s pretty clear that the big salaries do matter in the MLS Cup chase.

Donovan and Robbie Keane each scored from the penalty spot. Beckham did his part, especially early, essentially supplying all of the Galaxy offense with those laser-targeted balls over 40, 50 or 60 yards. Truly, his long-range passing early Saturday was even more deadly than usual.

The talk now will be how Los Angeles and manager Bruce Arena use the DP slots going forward. Who will replace Beckham? Will they have another one to replace in Donovan?

But this much is clear: using the slots wisely (and spending lavishly surely helps) can beat the path to glory that works in MLS.

Home field matters

Not that it?s any surprise, but the team with home field advantage just won for a second consecutive year. Going forward, teams will work even harder to be the higher seed, gaining a deeper understanding of what it means to get those few extra points, to advance a little higher up the combined table.

Talking to the Dynamo players and staff this week, they understand that they slipped in the standings because of too many draws at home against teams they probably should have beaten.

In critical moments the home field was the difference, especially during those telling, harried second-half minutes when the Galaxy found the way through and effectively finished off the contest, riding the momentum of vocal home ground support.

Experience matters

The Galaxy lost the plot for about 20-30 minutes in the middle of the match, as Houston hit the opener and then kept the home team from looking too threatening. But no worries ? they have the kind of experienced soldiers who won?t collapse under the moment.

Said Man of the Match Omar Gonzalez: ?None of us were actually worried. Me and Robbie were talking after and said that we didn?t see any other outcome other than us winning.?

The Galaxy won this match by recognizing an opponent left reeling. A quick succession of events midway through the second half. with the match tied, put the Dynamo on its heels ? and the Galaxy pounced.

That?s not as simple as it sounds. It takes experience to recognize the moment, to seize the initiative and really finish a stumbling foe. The Galaxy has men with the chops and the experience.

In the last 10-15 minutes, the Galaxy brilliantly managed out the match. Not only did Bruce Arena?s side keep tidy in the back and the midfield, preventing the Dynamo from getting many real opportunities.

That?s the experience working, too.

?We were putting a lot of pressure on them,? Donovan said. ?It seemed inevitable that the second goal was going to come.?

Omar Gonzalez is bound for the national team

On Friday, U.S. manager Jurgen Klinsmann mentioned his intentions to get Omar Gonzalez more firmly hammered into the U.S. plans.

Gonzalez did a little hammering of his own Saturday, hammering away ball after ball along the Galaxy back line, hammering his way into position for the second-half equalizer and leaving absolutely no doubt about his value to this club.

Klinsmann was at the Home Depot Center, and surely a little wide-eyed like the rest of us as the 2011 Defender of the Year put on such a stunning show.

It wasn?t just the physical attributes, either. Gonzalez was expertly positioned all afternoon, always seeming to find just the right spot.

Oh, on the Galaxy?s second goal, it was Gonzalez who knocked the telling ball back into position for the mad scramble to follow.

Big-game feel

The afternoon had a big-game feel to it ? and these events need such a thing.

This was the first year of a major MLS playoff tweak, where the higher seed among finalists get host rights. And it means so much. For L.A. players to dance with such delight before their home fans during the trophy presentation, to get the big noise as the Galaxy seized control over a telling three or four minutes, to get such sections full of impassioned supporters ? these are things that just don?t happen during neutral site finals.

It makes the events far more memorable and, in the long run, will boost MLS to places it wants to be that much faster.

(Keep checking back; lots more to come on the Galaxy win)

Marketing and Interviewing: How to use your marketing degree ...

Earning a college degree means investing in your future. You are putting stock into your life and your future career path. A bachelor?s degree in marketing can be an excellent way to secure a future with many employment opportunities in a variety of fields. Upon graduation, you will find that marketing graduates have the skills and strengths that are sought after in today?s workplace.

The truth is that obtaining a degree is challenging and it takes a dedicated person to accomplish this feat. That being said, earning a degree does not automatically ensure that a job is waiting for you when you graduate. Some graduates may have an advantage over others. Those who obtain a marketing degree may have that extra edge. With many accredited marketing degree programs including classes on how to sell, network with other professionals and market goods and services, these future business leaders are ready for any challenge. These skills will not only help you in your career, but in the world of interviewing as well. The skills you learn in an marketing program will essentially teach how to take any given product, service, company or person and make it so appealing to another consumer that they must buy/use/join or align with that specific tangible. Marketing graduates are adept as listening and understanding the needs of their clients as well.

One significant advantage that many marketers have is their unique personality and drive to succeed that pushes them to take risks and meet challenges in the world of work. Persuasive personality and confidence in their knowledge and skills make these successful graduates excellent at both interviewing and networking, two essential aspects of career development. These skills will not only assist a person in getting a job, but will help them continue to grow in their career as well.

Networking is the art of generating and nurturing relationships. Most college graduates have some experience with this process and some have been doing it throughout their life without even realizing it, never thinking about it from a professional aspect. It is an essential function within job hunting and career advancement. Marketers by nature and by training are great at this. They enjoy meeting new people and recognize the opportunities associated with not only making new acquaintances but remembering the specific details about this person and possibly even keeping a connection with them for years to come.

When it comes time to interviewing, marketing degree students are often successful. They are familiar with the mental agility and rapport needed to make lasting impressions. They understand the need to research a company before applying for a position and understanding the business model before showing up at an interview. They already have great communication skills and the attention to detail needed for success.

If you are contemplating earning a degree, it may be best to go with your dreams and passions. However, if you are finding that you are at a crossroad between what field of study to emphasize, consider a business marketing degree. As discussed, a marketing degree can take you far and open doors to many career paths. Linfield College offers you an opportunity to earn your Marketing Degree online. All of the courses in the marketing major and the general education requirements are offered online to help you achieve your bachelor?s degree in Marketing.
At Linfield College, you have a choice between the online bachelor?s degree in Marketing or the Certificate in Marketing. For those who have earned a bachelor?s degree already, the online certificate is a good alternative. You will gain the knowledge of the marketing specialty through the courses in the certificate.

The Marketing Certificate may be combined with a Linfield bachelor?s degree in another field, such as the Accounting degree or the Management degree. The certificate consists of four specialized marketing courses, so it can fit nicely into a student?s overall graduation plan.

The accredited online marketing degree or the marketing certificate will help prepare you to excel in the fields of marketing, and you will have additional skills in interviewing that will be of benefit throughout your professional career.

New job posting suggests Nokia may still be considering Android after all

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese outfielder Ichiro Suzuki has lost patience with the New York Yankees over a contract extension and has begun talking with other teams, his agent said on Friday. The Yankees have been busy locking up their principle pitchers, paying Hiroki Kuroda $15 million, Andy Pettitte $12 million and Mariano Rivera $10 million, drawing frustration from Ichiro. "At the beginning we talked a lot but since that time, zero," Ichiro's agent Tony Attanasio told Friday's New York Post. "As far as we are concerned we don't care what the Yankees do. ...

I mean, we would be ecstatic to have people contribute in any way! That could even just mean learning the framework and the software and using it in your own research. We have lots of tutorials, and we'd be happy to help if you want to make your own models. The software itself is pretty good, but it's academic software, and certainly we'd welcome anyone's contributions to the software! We're pretty responsive, either at any of our emails [uwaterloo.ca], or by making a github issue [github.com] if you need any assistance.

Unfortunately, I don't know if we have a lot of "low hanging fruit", things that we need done but are just too lazy to do so. Though I'm sure we could come up with some of those tasks if desired, as we're certainly lazy.
